lcd or notebook?

Okay. I have been planning on purchasing the 2407wfp lcd monitor for my desktop HDTV and other stuff. I do not pc game. So I was wondering if maybe I should just sell my desktop and buy a really nice laptop or buy the lcd. My dad is willing to buy my dell e510(pentium d 2.8ghz 1024mb ram 128mb graphics...etc.) for $550. This money combined with the money for the lcd would go into the purchase of the laptop. Should I get the laptop or the lcd? Will my desktop last me longer than the notebook as far as not becoming obsolete? Any help would be much apreciated.
