hi,

i'd like to get a new LCD and i expect to use it mostly for gaming and some internet browsing.

i didn't make a search on the forums and found a few topics about it, but they seem to be more about 22 inch monitors of out of date.

so here it goes...

i'm looking for a 19 or 20 inch monitor and i was wondering if i should get a 19 4:3 monitor, or a 19-20.1 WS...

from what i read, many people seem to recommend the WS monitor, but the ones ive seen, are 8ms (VX2025WM from viewsonic) and that scares me a bit (ghosts and bleeding?)

the other option is the VX922 Viewsonic (good reviews) but i'd prefer a WS which seems to be the future...

i have a budget of +-350-400

thank you for your advices.

Fred

Even though I can't stand the anti-glare coating...I'll have to agree with mista ting that nothing in the same price range can touch the Dell 2007FPW as far as features and performance. (if you get a good one like I did)

16ms?? kinda slow for gaming, isn't it?...

i was expecting to get something between 2-8ms
No, it's not really too slow...Dell seems to just be more honest ( ) with their specs than some other makers that like to quote gray to gray response times. I believe that Behardware did a measurement on the Dell and found the response time was actually on par with monitors that are supposedly faster and it performed very well on the ghosting test. I didn't notice my 2007FPW being any slower than my supposedly 8ms Acer F-20 for gaming so unless you are very sensitive you won't either..

Yeah basically anything rated 12 or under is good. I have a 12ms MAG from a couple of years ago, works great with no ghosting.

well since it's mostly for gaming purposes and for FPS games as well, i was expecting a fast respond time monitor...
one other thing is that i would prefer to buy one from a store (bestbuy, futureshop, etc..) so i can return it if i don't like it or it has some dead pixels.

i appreciate your comments

i read many good reviews on it, but it seems comparable with the VX922 which is like -100$

from what i've seen so far, in the 19in monitors, VX922 seems to be the one (quality/price).

i just don't know anything about the wide screen monitors and 20 inches...

thanks

I looked at them side by side and quite frankly the color quality wasn't even close. A game like Farcry looks much more vibrant on the NEC, so for me it was worth the extra $. NEC is the Mercedes of LCDs, though you pay for it.

If you can afford it, I would honestly go widescreen one way or another. Once you play something like HL2 or CS:S on WS, you'll never go back to 4:3. Make sure you have a nice video card though, something with 512MB of memory so you can get reasonable FPS @ 1680 X 1050. Also, IPS panels are the way to go, don't go with a TN panel.

I have an 214T display but its expensive at 700 bucks but it look amazing and i notice no blurring at 8ms
my friend has a 5ms 204B and it looks pretty good and the viewsonic 20" ws looks good

any 20 inch monitors under 8ms i should consider?

as for the 19's, i believe the vx922 and the Nec 90GX2 are my best choices!

I used to have the VX922, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. It was great, but the buttons break sooo easily. After a few months, the power button wouldn't even work anymore because it has cheap plastic tabs that hold it in, and they break off so the button doesn't function anymore; it just dangles. To turn it on, it would take me at least 2 minutes of fiddling to find the right angle to turn it on. I took it back to CompUSSR and the manager there said that was a very common issue with that monitor.

VX922 is great and buttons dont break easily (i havent broken any) LOL wth are u doing to the monitor? its 2ms response time and it was reviewed by tomshardware I believe and it did really well, one of the best response times..

viewsonic claims: 2ms gray-to-gray (avg.); 2ms white-black-white (typ)

eventhough the test showed this not to be the case on avg by their standards, it was lower then the other monitors it benchmarked

if you are looking for 19" monitor, this is a good gamers monitor and is now around 250? i believe, i got mine for 320 :)

Although they are not freely available anymore, aren't CRTs better than LCDs for gaming where contrast, black levels, etc., are concerned?

Isn't the term, "Gaming LCD" an oxymoron?

CRT's are far and away superior for gaming. The contrast is extremely important in dark games. Also, there is no ghosting and no input lag and, if you have a high quality CRT, you can run at 100+Hz and get away without V-sync for a large performance boost.

CRT's might be better for gaming experience, but i'll still go with an LCD...

i do play a lot of games, but i'm not a hardcore gamer. i just don't want to go back to CRT!

now, from what i read on a different board, Wide screen seems the way to go...

i need advices on a 20 inch WS monitor which are between 2-8 ms

thank you

total oxymoron. crt's are still king for gaming :D

Not anymore it isn't LCD's have come a long way in the past couple years.
There might be one or too that are "ok" for gaming but lcd's have YEARS to go to catch up to CRT's in picture quality, fact.
an average 700:1 contract ratio is no match for the 15000:1 contrast levels of your average crt :D
factor in response time, input lag and viewing angles and lcd's dont compare at all, to a nice crt.

Best of all Glossy Screen :). And its only $229, I am typing this out on the LCD right now, this has to be the best bang for the buck gaming LCD bar none.

i don't think that Costco's in Canada hold this product (not on their web site)...

i didn't see any major stores with it (bestbuy, futureshop, etc...)

from what i can see, it's about the same price as the Viewsonic VX2025 (on tigerdirect.ca)... i read better reviews for the VX2025 than the Sceptre so far.

i'll give it a look anyway, thanks!

VX922 at 75hz I have no ghosting, no mouse lag, nothing... I don't use vsync and get over 250fps in some source games with my system...

Maybe I have a special monitor :p
