LCD monitors and gaming

I am looking to buy one to relive some deskspace and to move one of my CRTs to another desk but I do game alot and I'm wondering if they compare with a CRT? I know a buddy of mine has one and says it bites the big one so i'm hesatant to buy one. Right now I have 2 CRTs connected to my main computer, one of them connected through a KVM switch to work on servers. I can't really tell how big they are, and don't know where to measure the size from, I do know though that the max resolution that I can get on one is 1280x1024 and after that I get a "Out of Range" error in a blue box.....

I don't know what im looking for but one at least as big as the one i have now (at least 1024x768 ) and does look real nice.

First, size is always measured diagonal, corner-to-corner. If your going to switch to LCD you want to take a good look, the transition can be hard. 17” and 19” as a rule have a native resolution of 1080 X 1024 and that’s pretty workable. If you need more screen space you will have to go dual monitors or 20” or better. At 20” you will probably be at 1600 X 1200 which, unless you have good eyes might be hard to accustom yourself too.

Scroll back in this forum, there is certainly no lack of opinion on any question you might have . In the end, go shopping, see what you like. After all, it’s your eyes.

Native?

I like 1280x1024 and that's what I'm in actually - I'd love to hit higher or get a widescreen resoulution(how do i go about doing that in the first place? what kinda monitor?)

I also use dual monitors, my primary at 1280x1024 and secondary at 1024x768, different res due to technologe (ATI RADEON 9000 PRO and a ATI RAGE 3d cards)

Ok, with a CRT monitor, as long as the setting you pick is within the range the unit can display any setting will look clear and bright. LCD’s on the other hand have a “native” setting, for instance a 17” is set to 1280 X 1024. You can’t go bigger, but if you decrease the resolution you start to loose picture quality, and text quality (as a rule).

looks to me i need to pay some big bux for a nice monitor...

I was thinking about a dual lcd + 21in? crt, where the crt is for gaming. I'm just curious houw it would turn out..... I'm still using some old Vivitron Gateway 2000 with I think 15 inch viewable diagnal, 13 horizontal screen (not including the outter shell).... it's a dual monitor setup right now, through my ATI Radeon 9000 pro and my ATI 3d Rage II card

Just trying to change my setup a little for the better.....

15", 17", and 19" LCDs have a native res of 1280x1024 (99%). 20" starts 1600x1200 (Why I paid extra for my 2000FP)

Gaming quality depends on the screen. Some screens are easier to detect ghosting, some are harder. Also depends on your eyes. I've never noticed any ghosting on my 2000FP (25ms), some have seen it on the 2001FP (16ms).

How big depends on the your budget. Which screen is best depends on budget. Some will recomend going biggest you can get, and sacrafice a little bit of quality. Some will say reverse that. Its up to you really...
