LCD Help, adjusting windows size without changing resolution?

I was wondering, is there a way to adjust the screen size to appear as if using a lower resolution without actually changing out of native resolution?

I got an LCD cheap, really, will be here soon, and I would really like to use it, however, I do have an eye condition which makes reading text difficult. On a CRT 17in, I'm used to using 800x600 for general windows purpose, or maybe 1024x768. Is there any way to get windows to look like this without leaving native resolution?
 
I dont think its possible on just the desktop, But once your in a browser on the internet yes it is possible. Just use a browser like Opera and use the zoom in feature. This will make everything as big as you want.(only the webpage though)
 
You can make the text and stuff bigger in windows by display properties->appearance->font size XL
 
Well I also see that the DPI settings can be adjusted to make windows appear larger without lowering the resolution. It's just has an anolog connector, no DVI, but fro what I hear, the difference isn't too great. I'm getting a Dell 173fp 17" LCD
