I'm thinking about buying an LCD for my girlfriend near the end of June. She has a pretty crappy computer(like 5 years old - dell, can barely run The Sims 2). Because of this I can't get her a huge widescreen or anything, as I'm unsure if her videocard can even go over 1280x1024. So it looks like it will have to be a 19" monitor.

It'll be used *mostly* for web browsing, so I want sharp text rendering and decent colors. Other than that, a little bit of games - usually downloadable flash game demos. Price range is gonna be around $250(though I *might* go up to around $300 if you guys think its worth it).

depends whether you wan something "good enough" or are investing for the future. There are 19" models around for $160 or so, or $300 for really nice ones (eg... samsung 971)

Pretty much anything is an upgrade to what she has now. She's got a 17" monitor that still has the rounded screen. I figure I'd get her this, and in about a year or two she is going to be getting a new computer - it'll knock off a few hundred from her price tag. So I guess future proof is nice. But it doesn't matter much, as she won't be playing many games, and she isn't the one to watch videos or DVDs on her computer - so HD isn't a problem either.

Just want a nice monitor for browsing and the occassional flash game - maybe WoW - so a decent speed, but doesn't have to be 2ms.

As for the link, I'm finding it hard to discover many LG reviews out there. Are they generally a good company? I was thinking about stick with the "Big Boys" i.e. Dell, Viewsonic, Samsung, etc. But if these use the same panels and whatnot and are cheaper, that would be great.

I've had good luck with the Hanns-G 19" widescreen. It's not spectacular by any means but it's got sharp text, and good colors once calibrated. For $170 I think its a good deal ($250 is too much for a 19" these days IMHO).

Yeah, the Hanns*G and the LG monitors seem to be in the price range. Is there a reason there are hardly any reviews for these monitors? Are they just using the same panels as the other guys, but don't have as many features - such as height adjustment and whatnot?

Well LG owns samsung.. and samsung tends to make quite a few of panels for dell and apples displays.. samsungs seem to be nicer than LGs though, simply for features and looks..

Id reccomend the E228 from dell.. its like 230ish i think.. 22" widescreen 1680x1050. Not the absolute best but its got size and price right up your alley, just check the video card specs.. even most older video cards should be able to go up that high

Just checked, and I can now confirm that the highest her current video card can go is 1280x1024. So it looks like 19" is the limit.

why don't you just build her a cheap computer that is in the good 500 dollar range and can be upgraded later in the future. That's just my thinking thats' all. A good monitor that I would recommend is Viewsonic. I had one before and the quality is good. Just a thought
