Any suggestions on a good LCD monitor for gaming?

LCD or CRT?

p.s. make sure you could power it

otherwise if you cant get that which most of us cant, the dell 2005 (2007 soon) or 2405 (2407 soon) would be a good bet. go widescreen.
 
I've been searching for this answer for quite some time.

You're always gonna have the fan boys touting the latest , biggest, widest , LCD monitor as *the bomb* and -:eek: omgwtfpwnzerz:eek:-

The truth of the matter is it's extremely complex.

You have response times with LCDs instead of the familiar refresh rates.

One other thing of concern is the contrast ratio.

I have been told that companies fudge their response times and contrast ratios and do not follow a unified measurement.

This is useless.

The market basically sucks right now.

CRT monitors are better for gaming, hands down. LCDs are trying anything to get up to cathode ray tubes performace. Ahhh tubes for the win :p

In any event, manufacturers are not making really awesome CRT monitors anymore. When I say awesome, I mean Aperture Grill technology over the run of the mill CRT Shadow Mask or Invar Shadow Mask panel used for their monitors.

Aperture Grills give the best and brightest colors on CRTs , they are awesome. Finding a Flight Display Trinitron monitor, which uses Aperture Grill technology, are slim to non. I haven't found any anywhere.

Diamondtron is another type of Aperture Grill, these can be found , but can be pricey. I have seen one md by Mitsubishi for 5 grand!!! :eek:

So when searching through CRT monitors that are brand new, you are basically stuck with some flat display shadow mask or invar shadow mask , mediocre CRT monitor.

Now if you wanna a refurb and get lucky, the Sony FW900 is the only way to go. Good Luck! I aint doing it.

So we are basically forced into getting an LCD and hoping that the fast response time doesn't totally screw the image quality up.

Generally these fast response time LCDs have diplorable contrast ratio and shitty image quality making the fast response time kinda not worth the lack luster of graphical content.

LCDs also have native resolution, which means that if you set the resolution outside the native, pixels have to either render coupled / quadrant combined or an individual split as such dependant upon how you are adjusting the resolution.

Response time can't hold a candle to refresh rate, even if it was 0ms.

Then there is black levels, you can never achieve true black.

I'd say shop around town to find a monitor, thats what I am doing now.

Buying a monitor off the internet has been more of a grievance from what I have seen on the forums as of late.

It be best if you could see how it functions for yourself, and then maybe find one like that online for cheaper.

If you can stomache the poorer image quality of a fast response time LCD, and the horrid gray to gray scale it uses that makes locating things in game totally suck, then go lcd, i dunno.

The game selection kinda blows right now anyways.

If you don't have a lucrative job to comply with the rate at which hardware is being pumped out, like myself, sucks to be you. Just my two cents.

i have never heard of any of those problems but i never really looked into LCD's so. the biggest, and most notable problem is the blurring. but thats been all but eliminated by now.

but yea like if you want a purly functional monitor. get a crt. but if you want a sleek sexy, fits-into-your-pocket-its-so-thin monitor, get an LCD

Im using a CRT Sync Master 955DF from samsung, i love it. not only that but the models you can buy now are some of the first to support HDCP. and like i said no complaints about this monitor. had it for.... 3 years? hasnt crapped out on me once, great color. =

but as for LCDS, you cant really go higher then 23" without needing AS(at 1600X1200), or so iv found. and there was a thread with a guy who bought a View Sonic VX2025, and the review he wrote on it makes it seem like a helluva good deal. i have seen one, but i havnt seen it perform with 3D turned on. so i wouldnt know from experiance how good it is.
 
The Samsung SyncMaster 955DF is alright. 1024x768 recommended refresh rate of 85 hz. It's Invar Shadow Mask.

The CTX FD Trinitron PR960FL 19" I have here does 1024x768 at 100hz refresh rate.

I am building a second PC so I need a second CRT that is just as good; however, all that are on the market now pale in comparison. It's like taking a fucking step backwards... wtf.

If I understand correctly HDCP will only matter if you make the switch to Windows Vista.

Probably a Microsoft ploy to get everyone to purchase a legitmate copy of Windows XP & XP64 getting everyone paranoid for Vista, when in fact, Vista will probably flop.

Although in due time, it could become an industry standard. Who knows *shrugs*

The future looks expensive.

Though if you can stick with a XP based MMO for a good 6 years you may be able to ride the wave for awhile. :p

Dells makes great LCDs (I am not a Dell fan boi by any stretch of the imagination). You should be able to find a great Dell monitor for whatever your budget is. I also have two 2001fp Dells. My 3007 replaced a 23" Apple Cinema Display and a 23" Sony. At my business I have three workstations that are dual monitor with 19" Samsung LCDs (about 1.5 years old). I have probably about 15 LCD monitors all together of different makes but I do not know as much as the professor of monitors so maybe you should take his advice on the more technical aspects.

Nah, those LCDs are nice for all around applications.

It's just when you are swiveling around in a 3d environment, repsonse time is not as valuable as refresh rate.

And to even get decent response times you scrifice contrast ratio and image quality.

There are decent LCD monitors out there that are probbaly great performers int he gaming industry, I just wouldn't know...
 
Thanks for posting that Fuzzy, it's nice to see an honest response on monitors once in a while. I'm not against LCDs (I'm still deciding what kind of monitor to get for my new system), but I often lament the fact that no one really makes good CRTs anymore; you just can't beat the clarity. It's the same reason I bought a 36" Sony Vega XBR TV in stead of a plasma; I've never seen a sharper picture than what I have on my set. I did find one place in AZ that is selling the HP version of the FW900, so if they still have one when I get back from Iraq next month, I might drive up to check it out. If that doesn't pan out, I'll probably be getting an LCD since there isn't much to choose from in the CRT world. At least LCD tech has made some huge steps foward since it first came out.

The question I am concerned with currently...

Brand new flat panel Shadow Mask / Invar Shadow Mask CRT monitors ranging from 200 - 400 ish in price.

In comparison to a 2 - 6 MS response time LCD with a contrast ratio of around 700:1

Will the difference be noticable?

The big thing about my Aperture Grill is the high refresh rate. 1024 x 768 resolution with 100hz refresh rate is nothing to scoff at when gaming.

I get like 30 FPs in the wild in WoW and i have this five year old gaming rig with a geforce 3 ti200 and a 1.4 gig tbird with 712 mg of pc133 memory.

Pretty much the monitor allowing em to have a good gaming experience.

Will I even get anything near that with 4 MS response time? probably not.

So.. it seems most Shadow Mask / Invar Shadow Mask get 85 Hz maximum refresh rate at 1024x768.

That's why I am kinda disapointd. The monitor I bought five years ago that is discontinued is a better gaming monitor than what is on the market right now aside a bad ass refurb FW900.
 
I was on outpost.com and saw they had a refurb Dell aperature grill trinitron 21" monitor and I got excited for about 7 seconds until I saw that it is "currently unavailable". I have read a few of the horror stories here too, but I figure Fry's should be pretty good for refurbs.

I was in your boat a week ago. I was looking for a monitor and was looking for a good 19" CRT Monitor cause my old LG 19" CRT just died on me for no apparent reason. Well I learn quick there is not much to chose from in the world of New CRTs and I started to look a LCD's and didn't like what I saw. Lucky I found a place that sold refurbish CRTs and landed me a good deal on a used 21" Sony Trinitron FD Perfect Flat IBM P275. It has both a VGA port and a DVI port. Since I have a 9800pro with a DVI port I bought a cable to use on it. All I got to say is HL2 looks pretty damn good at 2048 x 1536 with a 75hz refresh rate. I also only paid $237 shipped. I hope it last me at least 6 years like my LG did.

If you go to Froogle and type in "21" crt" I actually found quite a few places that still carry some good monitors (non-aperature grill though). I am returning to Arizona when I get out of here, so I will probably drive up to azatech and check out their refurbs. If I don't find anything I like, I will most likely order the Viewsonic G225fb, which I remember got some good reviews back in the day. I was thinking about ordering one of the HP refurbs (FW900 but HP version) off ebay from here: 24" CRT , since I can buy the two year warranty for it for $29, but after seeing some of the ebay stories here, I'm a little hesitant.
