After reading this forum I decided to purchase a Samsung 940B or 940BF very soon and now it's my son, a CRT's fan, who finally decided to try a LCD.
He edits movies with Avid , watch movies and play games (fast response rate needed). He says he prefers quality over size and if he can get for the same budget ( 400$ ) a Top of the line quality 17'' instead of a "OK" or "good" quality 19'' he'll go for the 17'' without any hesitation. He was thinking of a Samsung or Viewsonic. Any advice ?

Either monitor is a great choice. I'm looking to get one of them once i have the cash. The ONLY problem he might have depends on whether TrueColor acuracy is important to him. Since it's a 6-bit panel instead of 8-bit, it dithers some colors. However, 8-bit panels tend not to be as good for games.

Have you checked out Budwise's thread on his 940B?

Yep, I did and reading his thread is one of the reasons I decided to pick the 940B for me. Since my son said that he prefers to spend his 400$ on a "top of line" 17'' instead of "good but not top the line" 19'' , I wanted to know if the posters of this board think that there are such 17'' monitors of the same price than a 940B but of even a better quality.

I don't know if Samsung has different series of LCDs but I know that Viewsonic has different series for different budgets and you can find all sizes of monitors in each one of the series. So for example a 17'' of one of the series may be of a better quality than a 19'' from an other series.
My son do love CRT's and until very recently did not think to purchase a LCD at all but as far as I know he did like the Viewsonic VA1912WB but less the Samsung 940B , both of them owned by some of his friends. But still he would like to know according the readers of this board what is the best LCD he can get for his budget no matter if has to pick a 17'' instead of a 19''.
 
Hmm, I really don't see that much difference between an 8 bit and a 6 bit panel. Maybe my older eyes make a difference but I doubt it. The only way to know if it will make a difference to him is to find the two panels displayed together and see if he notices a difference. This screen I have looks much better than my old NEC FE700 CRT ever did & I was quite surprised at that, being a photographer I thought I would notice a difference but no, all I see is a bright clear screen with no faults that is much easier to view. I bought mine at best buy and there was a 17" NEC LCD close to it, I don't remember the model number but it cost $160- more and I couldn't tell the difference other than the response speed was 2ms. I had 2 LG 4ms screens before this one and I still don't see the difference, I'm totally satisfied with my 930B.
