LCD Display is Blank

I've got an HP L1800 LCD that's a few years old and just yesterday I lost all picture on it. The monitor still turns on and off, and even goes into sleep mode when I turn off my PC so I know it's detecting the signal from the computer. I can't even get the on screen display to change the monitor settings to show up, I just get a blank screen. I tried a different monitor on the computer and it worked, so I know it's not the video card. Is the monitor shot? Any ideas?

Well if you shine a light on it (direct sunlight is best, flashlight should work) can you see anything on the screen? If so the backlight has problably gone.

If you can't see the OSD properly then it's likely a problem with the backlight.

If it's not that, try making sure that your computer isn't set to a resolution higher than what the LCD can use. Use another monitor and set the resolution to something safer, like 800x600, and then try using the LCD again. It could also be that the refresh rate was set too high for the monitor.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the replies guys. I don't think it's a refresh/resolution problem seeing as I didn't change anything and the monitor has been working for the past few months with the same configuration. I'll give the flashlight trick a try though.

Well I tried the flashlight trick and sure enough I can barely see the on screen display, so I guess it is the backlight that went out. Is it possible to get this fixed? Does it cost more than it's worth?

I'm not an expert on LCDs, but my guess is that it'd cost quite a lot to have the backlight repaired/replaced. With LCDs continually coming down in price, it might be less hassle (and ultimately less expensive) to buy a new one.

I know with DLP and LCD rear-projection TVs, it's only a matter of replacing a lamp. Does anyone know if this is the case for monitors? I highly doubt it, though.
