LCD Choice For Gaming

I know there are other posts like this but I have read through them and not found them too helpful.

Could anyone who has experience with LCDs tell what is a decent model to go with right now for gaming. I am looking for something around the $350-450 range and I have read all the reviews for the L90D+ and Viewsonics two new monitors with the 8ms and 4ms response times. My two problems is first of since the response time they list is not very accurate which LCD monitor is doing the job gaming wise without any serious blurring. Also with LCD how much does refresh rate really matter. I know its a difference when it comes to CRT and LCD refresh rates but could anyone explain. Thanks.
 
I am just having a damn hard time narrowing it down to a few lcds to pick from. As I read more the list gets larger and more complicated with the response times not being really that close when tested.
 
Samsung 193P+. Also, the Viewsonic VP191b. I will tell you why. First, I chose the Samsung because of poor quality issues with Viewsonics I and my IT friends have had in the past. I don't know if that is really an issue with the VP191B in particular.
These two monitors are Overdrive 8-bit panels. The L90D+ is a 6-bit panel, and I found a noticeable difference in the color graduations and color quality. The Overdrive technology has its own visual artifacts, as do all of the LCD monitors, but to me, the much better color as well as the more consisitent speed across the color transition range make these two the best out there right now. Most LCD monitors have the speed rating at only one point, you guessed it, the one that looks best, when in fact the rest of the transition range is highly variable (meaning for many monitors it sucks, no matter what the fake number is reported by the manufacturer).
You will find, as I have, that people's reactions or sensitivity to the various artifacts of LCD monitors (ghosting, blurring, Overdrive artifact, etc.), are widely variable and VERY subjective. I myself find in my games that the 193P+ does not bother me at all with any of the LCD artifacts, but others differ with me on this monitor, as well as all of the LCD monitors.
Get REAL honest testing as Toms Hardware.
TRY the monitors for yourself, with your own games, with your own eyes, as that will be your best and final decision maker. Make sure you get it from somewhere local with a good return policy.

Thanks for the input. I was going first with that new 4ms monitor from viewsonic then after reading toms hardware it seemed like it might not be the best bet for gaming. Thanks again for the response.
 
You are welcome. After the Toms Hardware review of the newest Viewsonic monitor, which I also got excited about, when it turned out to be a dog, I was back to the two original ones, because of speed and 8-bit color. I am very happy with the display and the overall physical quality of the Samsung.
