I know LCDs are fragile and are never meant to be touched, but exactly what's the threshold for it? I mean, if you touched your screen and nothing happens right away, does that mean there’s no any unseen damage?

My roommate just got a new ACD 23” (beautiful monitor BTW), and his 3 year-old daughter touched it   (she’s watching the A Bug’s Life), and now he’s freaking out. So I’m wondering how fragile current generation LCDs are?

Thanx,
jenneth

I'm pretty sure you'd see something if it were damaged, like a discoloration or dead pixels.

So, if there's no discoloration or dead pixels then there's nothing to worry about? Well, I'll tell him the good news... thanx guys, I appreciate the help. :) :)

It's not so fragile that touching it would damage it.

...as long as the kids hands weren't covered in ick, depending on the screen coating they can be a bastard to clean.

so how do you guys clean yours?
what do you use, just mild soap and water?
what to dry it with?

This is what happens if you "touch" it too hard!

I am totally the same. My family knows not to touch my 3 displays.

Touching them won't do any damage though.. not unless you're holding something like a metal tip pen etc. I only get annoyed because of the fingerprints! :) I can't stand monitors covered in finger prints.

I use a damp cloth with no soap and let it air dry. I have some static cloths I use to get dust off too.

all cotton, like a washcloth? or something with no lint, maybe a chamois?

We've had quite a few traders beat down some of the display in anger with their phones or punch the screen. You'll get a black hole or funny discolored pixels, you can touch em but any strong force hitting the display will crush the crystals and kill pixels. I wish more lcd's came with glass/perspex faces, they would feel less fragile and survive your kids throwing a car at the screen. :)

Yes, that's a good question. Why don't more LCDs come with glass/perspex? I remember the NEC linup with them. It sure makes them a heck of a lot easier to clean if you can just wipe the thing off and dust doesn't get trapped between the panel and the bezel which always happens.

Because even non-reflective glass reflects.. That's the only reason.. Sony laptops have some sort of covering

Glen.

Oh my god, kids and LCDs. My two-year-old half-sister loves my computer because I have all the pictures from our last family vacation on it, and she likes watching the slide show. Everytime a picture of a damn moose comes up, she has to touch the screen. I've taught her to be gentle, however, so she doesn't cause a lot of damage. Smart kid though, she knows which key to press to advance the picture.

We had some neovo lcd's monitors which came with glass surface, the glass surface like a lot of plasma had some sort of colour filter that depened the blacks, but t did suffer like crt's from reflections of the glass, if you had a bright room you'd hate i'd guess.

on his new laptop! It was one of the slow motion "Oh shiiiit" moments. Luckily it didn't do anything. Stupid dart didn't stick to the screen either damn it. :D

Amen...I can tell you all the people here at work that are "Screen Touchers." Some times I come back in the morning and I can tell the tech guy installed something on my computer! My wife used to be a screen toucher, but we worked that out in the dating stage!

I serious test of LCD durability may be the LCD's out on display at your local Wal-Mart. I saw a unsupervised 4 year old poking his / her fingers directly in the middle of all the LCD's within a 4 ft reach. She was just as dazzled as I was seeing all the pretty colors radiate from her fingers. The Wal-Mart dood at the counter just sat there...like he'd given up on protecting them.....nothing like seeing a little kid jabbing a 30" lcd lol!
