Hi All,

Just wanted to ask if you all had any advice on my problem. I have a Dell Inspiron 640m laptop and the LCD stopped working. From reading, i found that it may have been the LCD Inverter which is shot so I replaced that, but still a no go. Every time I turn the laptop on, the screen will show correctly for a bout 2 seconds then it will turn black. While on for the 2 seconds, I will hear a buzzing sound and right when it cuts out, I smell something burning.

Laptop is out of warranty so that is not an option. Just wanted to find out what advice you have on what could be going wrong.

Thanks!

I'd say that it's the backlight.
Backlights do wear out with time, depending on your model you might be able to find a replacement on ebay or something but they're probably more expensive than an inverter unfortunately.

If you watch very carefully when the image turned black (and the computer is on) you probably can see that the LCD itself is working but that since the backlight is gone there's no light (you might use a flashlight to see this better).

If that's the case then the most common causes are either the inverter (which drives the backlight) or the backlight itself and since you already replaced the inverter my vote is on the backlight.

Although I find it unlikely you could always hook up a monitor to be sure that an image is being displayed and that it's not the graphics card, but I'd doubt that and seeing how something burns when turned on I'd be careful about doing it too much :)
