Buddy of mine has a LCD computer monitor that when he turns on, for a split second, the image of the desktop can be seen, but then immediately turns off. The monitor is still getting the signal, and it does this on both his and my computer, as well as both of our laptops.

This monitor worked fine for him until one day he plugged it into his laptop, and the next day it just stopped working. Any suggestions on what might be causing this issue?

While it should be working, shine a torch on the screen and see if there is still an image on the LCD.
If so, the backlight or its starter has failed.

Sounds very familar to what happened to my Westy display. You turn it on, for a split second you can see a image of the desktop with xfire opened and then a quick line scans down to half of the screen and turns off.

Well since my screen was out of service date, I opened it up and saw some caps blew up on the power board. Replaced them and monitor started working again, granted by the time I found out about this the monitor has been sitting around for over a year. :(

Look around youtube for a quick tutorial or user that had the same problem. For once youtube helped me out.

Samsung?

Lots of Samsung displays are reported to have bad caps in the power supplies causing problems like this. Should be DIY if that's the case. Look for bloated and oozing caps, same as on a mobo or power supply with bad caps.

I actually just had my Samsung LNT4061F die 4 days ago because of this shit. I found a thread from searching google so I knew what was going on when the TV started acting up. Bastards at Samsung refuse to acknowledge they have a problem. Very easy to fix yourself though thank god.

I don't know if this would be the same thing though. At least with the tvs they wont actually turn on anymore. Since his starts for a second I would think its something else.

Like I said same thing happend to my old westy 19 inch and countless youtube videos show this problem or similar to the op's and what I had.

If the op is not sketchy on opening the lcd to see if any caps are blown, it might be a quick fix.
