is it possible to backlight an LCD that is not backlit? it is just a 20x4 text LCD. is it possible to use LEDs or something to make it shine? i don't have it yet so i can't try it out but i was just wondering if anyone knew?

It can be done using either EL sheets (check out allelectronics.com for some kits) or by side-lighting the screen using LEDs; however it would be cheaper and easier just to buy a backlit 4x20 LCD off of eBay for $15. You risk spending too much, having a crappy result if you do it yourself, and wasting time (how much do YOU value your time?)

i couldn't find any backlit LCDs on ebay. the one i got wasn't backlit but it only cost $7 plus $5 shipping. can you direct me to the backlit ones?

Keep in mind that these are auctions, not fixed price, so the prices can (and do) often go up.

In the future you can find them here:

[edit] The EL backlit displays require a seperate inverter I believe, however, the color is usually more uniform than LED backlighting. [/edit]

Buy a LED baclight LCD. Not EL.

They last longer. ~50000hrs for LED agains ~3000hrs for EL.

Usually not, because a non-backlit display will have a reflective rear polarizer that will not allow light from behind the display to show through.
