i'm thinking about using my exhisting components (check sig) and somehow mounting them behind an lcd monitor in somewhat of a civilized and protective manner so that i could have an LCD all-in-one type pc. any good ideas on how i could do this?

or perhaps i should just go the other way around, take the stand off the LCD and somehow mount it proper into the side of the case?

Back in the day, when the search engine here actually worked, I or someone else would have searched for a thread showing how someone tore apart thier LCD and installed it into the side of thier case. There were actually quite a few of those types of mods and they did look pretty impressive. While I wouldn't mind seeing one of those mods again, you did mention making your whole case from scratch to accomodate everything you needed in one package, I personally think that, that would look a lot better. Your choices of materials to build your custom case is limited only by your imagination. Some of the things you can use would be plexi, metal, wood, plastic, Lego's, and the list just keeps running. Keep us posted as to what you decide for the project, and maybe you can even make a thread here dedicated as a work log to show us step by step how your project is going.

You could take an old CRT monitor, strip out all the internals, paint it, install the LCD in the front and all the computer components in the rear of the casing. I always thought those were pretty cool setups.

Yeah, I'm going to do this with a bare LCD from a laptop and a tiny EPIA-N motherboard. I am doing the "enclosure" from scratch using 0.060" 6061-T6 aluminum sheet and using a bending brake to bend the aluminum into a sort of half-exposed "enclosure."

The motherboard, LCD controller, LCD backlight inverter, and power supply will be sandwiched between the LCD module and the protective metal enclosure. At the top and bottom it will be left open for natural convective airflow. The metal enclosure will wrap around the back of the LCD and computer components, screwing into the holes on each side of the LCD module. Holding the entire assembly up will be a modified pedestal-type picture frame.

I am waiting on the LCD controller, but soon I will have some pictures to share if you're interested.

Yea, my only issues with that is it puts all those fans and noise a few feet closer to your face (and directly pointed at your ears)

LCD's are fairly fragile. i'd reccommend handbuilding the case, then adding another 2 inches or so on the side and haveing the LCD motor out when turning on and motor in when turning off. either that, or somehow flip out so that when not in use, it's protected. a cracked LCD would be a BAD thing...

If you started the thread or posted in it, you can look at the subscribed threads list in you usercp, and go back far enough and your bound to find it.

Happy to help...

i think he means to mount a LARGE lcd in the side of his case. like...a full time monitor. the standard lcd screen s hould be protection enough.

yes, i know that's what he means.

but i asusme he wants it for transporting around and such. those kind of LCD's arent meant for that kind of stress. like i said, i'd reccommend some way of keeping it protected while not in use.
