My friend wants to get an 8800gt on ebay that is missing its 6 pin power connector.

he wants me to test my 8800gts without the 6 pin to see if it will power up. I swear to him up and down it won't because it needs the extra power (and i won't risk messing up my card for him ;)). The ebay auction is missing its 6 pin ;)

someone please tell me i am right :)

If it's like $25 or less and he has some soldering knowhow and the break looks clean? Go for it. I'd get a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter, strip off the 8 pin side and solder the bare wires to the proper contact points on the board.

That said, it really does depend on the extent and exact type of the damage, and I'm sure the seller will say "I never promised it would work" if even after making the repair, assuming it's possible, the card still doesn't function.

Also, yes, it absolutely must have the 6 pin power to function at all. There is no way around this. It will just squeal at him otherwise.

Starting the machine without power to your card will not harm it, it will just make a god-awful noise. You might consider doing this to prove your point. I've forgotten to connect power to my 8800 GTXs several times -- it doesn't hurt them, they just don't work until you shut down and plug them in properly.

Funny image:

matrix563: "This is what happens if you plug it in without the power cable."
(SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE)
friend: "Oh god, what's that noise? Make it stop!"
matrix563: "That is the wailing of the damned, all those video cards whose souls have been rendered inadequate by your robbing them of the power they so dearly need."
friend: "So... it won't work then?"
(SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-)
(system powers off)
matrix563: "No, no it won't."

It will boot without power - it should even get into Windows, but you will be at significantly reduced clock speeds.

Will it boot - yes.

Will it get into Windows - probably.

Will it be usable at all for gaming without the aux power connector - hell no.

But you don't have to buy a card without the connector to make this magic happen. The fact that the card does not have the connector indicates to me that it has been damaged.

:D I am at work and this made my day smile hahaha
Thanks for the bump LMAO
:p This is too funny ...

Have you ever TRIED turning it on without power? It just squeels at you. REALLY loud. I forgot to plug my cards in once and got scared when I turned it on.

IF it is really cheap and IF it can still boot without it and has been tested / proven to still be able to. It "may" be worth the effort. Just remind him that a brand new card that is a lot faster is only 150ish now days :p

I've fired up my computer forgetting to plug in my 8800GTS twice. My computer will boot into Windows fine. But once booted in, I'm greeted with an nVidia prompt warning me that my card is running in reduced performance mode unless I plug in the power adapter.

It won't hurt anything. In fact, I would think it would do less harm because your card is running cooler, right?

 no...
All the card would do is display video. Anything 3d has potential to ruin the card.

yeah the sqeeeeee is right. An alarm goes off when you forget and if by some chance it is able to draw enough power from the pci-e bus then Nvidias software will kick in telling you it doesn't have enough power to go into 3D mode.
