my friends Toshiba laptop wouldnt boot up yesterday so she asked me to take a look at it. the power light will come on but I dont hear any hard drive noise whatsoever and nothing will come on the screen. its not even 2 years old but I guess the hard drive has gone out. any suggestions or advice?

usually if its a harddrive the bios will atleast turn on.. so i doubt its the hard drive causing the issues.. but if you think it is.. take the hard drive out and try booting it again.. it shouldnt need the hard drive to get to the bios screen or it will come up with an error saying the hard drive is missing.. but my best bet is that its the motherboard.. have already had to rma 4 toshiba laptops in the last 3 years including 1 that was only 6 months old all with dead motherboards but most of the issues were linked to the horrible nvidia chipset that was on them.. only toshiba i have that hasnt failed and is a little over a year 1/2 old has the ati x1200 igp.. all the nvidia ones have failed..

well she said the hard drive used to be audible and now it does nothing and the laptop wont turn on at all. I didnt know you could get to bios without a hard drive but i have never been in that situation. btw it is an ati equipped Toshiba. its turned on right now and just sitting there but for some reason it is putting out a ton of heat. I guess that means at least something is running inside of it.

im guessing its the turion x2 processor in it then? which run hot as bloody hell.. its quite possible the heat fried the hard drive.. thats the one thing im worried about with my toshiba turion x2 TL-60.. hard drive sits at a constant 50C.. laptop drives have gotten some what cheaper lately.. i would just try replacing it see if that really is the issue.. but if its turning on and putting out heat then thats a good sign..

It should be fairly simple to remove the HDD from the toshiba and hooking it up either in another laptop that works, or a desktop, and attempt to boot from that drive.

However, it sounds mobo/chipset related to me, as well.

A friend of mine's hp experienced the same thing last week. I hooked his HDD into my comp and booted fine.

Then, I tried hooking up his latop via VGA to my monitor to test the panel condition.

This showed no results ( if the panel is the issue, the BIOS and/or OS should be displayed on the secondary)

Therefore, I tore it all apart looking for a loose connection or obvious hardware problems and found nothing.

He's now in the process of looking for a new one.

yeah i think the biggest issue with the toshiba laptops are the cooling.. or lack there of.. and the fact that there is no insulation between heat sources.. so if the CPU is running at full load 80C+ the entire system runs at 80C+.. and the fact that toshiba refuses to install cool n' quiet support in the bios for the turion processors..

well I listened closely and the hard drive does startup and make a few little really quiet clicks but thats hit. seems like it would be making much more noise while trying to boot. I have no way of really checking the hd from another pc since only my gaming pc has sata and I have no spare cables anyway.
