I just recently went from a radeon 9600se to a 9800pro, not sure if that was the best thing to do for $250 :/

My question is whether I will see a sizeable performance jump if I go with a ASUS K8N-E and a AMD Athlon 64 3200+

this is probably going to be the last upgrade for a while, funds permitting. Any suggestions/changes?

you'll see a huge difference. i went from a 2100 thoroughbred to a 3000 winchester and an Asus A8V and i couldn't be happier. you'll see the most difference in game framerates and multitasking. i was stunned to see that my crusty GF4 Ti 4200 was STILL bottlenecked by my 2100. i went from 10,255 in 3dmark01 to 11,650. i'm sure your 9800 pro will be able to open up ALOT more than my GF4 did.

One suggestion, i would go with a socket 939. Dual core processors sound like they're gonna be the next standard and the AMD version will drop into a socket 939. so if you want to be future proof, go with a socket 939 setup. if you just want a great upgrade and enjoy it for years to come and do another MB/CPU swap later down the road, then the parts you picked are perfect.

P.S. a socket 939 would even be around the same price or cheaper depending......

alright, sounds good. I'll end up going with the socket 939 then.

That brings me to my next question. Is nforce3 really necessary?
This mobo looks great, but lacks nforce 3. I guess I'm not fully clear on what that is exactly.
