So i want to draw another few years out of my rig in sig below so im thinking of dropping for two 4890's. My e6600 has a bad stepping and only makes it to 3ghz so im weary of bottle necking these cards. Whats your guys take, would i be alright or should i go for a 9550 as well? Supposedly its supported by this ancient mobo but a little tedious at times to get it running right.

Worth the money for a new cpu or would the frame gain be negligible?

whats the res of your monitor? what games do you play?

your PSU may not be capable of running two 4890s first of all
secondly, judging from your rig and to be money conscious, I would say go for one 4890 and higher clocked dual core for gaming. However, if you have the money def get the quad and a 4890. two will be overkill for your cpu right now, and two may still be overkill depending on your monitor res and games you play

Don't atm, wait for sept 10th AMD is going to unveil their new lineup of radeons.

with your cpu using a 4890 crossfire setup would cause a little bit of cpu limitation especially below1920. also there is no point with the next gen coming out in less than a month.

Well I've checked the amprage on the psu and I shouldn't have a problem running the cards. Not sure what the powe difference would be between the 2 CPUs but I'm hoping it wouldn't push that psu over the top.

I know the new amd cards are coming but I reall like the price range these cards are at now. Anything new is going to be IN the 350-400$ CAD range anyways.

I'm gaming presently at 1680x1050 however that monitos days are numbered, dvi no longer works and it's getting flakier everday. I'm thinking about a large tv as a monitor down the road so this setup would be nice if I go that route.

As for what I play, most of the action/fps titles, maybe upcoming on some wow if I don't fill all my free time, ofc sc2 when it finally rolls out etc

That is why we're saying wait for it, if you are going to X-fire 4890's that'll cost you $400 CAD, for the same price, you'd get a single GPU that might not be as fast as the xfire 4890's but it will be faster then a single 4890 and you wont have inconsistent performance. PLUS when the new cards come out, these cards are going to be even cheaper! so if you still dont like their performance/price ratio, grab 2 4890's for even cheaper.

QFT. We all know that once new products comes out the manufacturer wants to get rid of old stock hence lower prices. I have been waiting half a year for AMD to release their next gen cards, so 20 days cant be that much longer.

Well i figure two 4890's > single next gen however i guess ill wait till the leak of new info around the 10th. Do you guys think they'll be much more of a price drop? 4870s are only 170 cad now 0.o!

You may be figuring wrongly. Many games don't support crossfire. It doesn't hurt just to wait and see what the 10th will bring.

Performance hints, that the new card will roughly equal the performance of a 4870x2, as a single card.

Eh its all speculation a this point and AMD hyping themselves and their customer base up to draw sales. Until i see benches those cards are only going to preform 25% better then current gen in my mind.

Why would you assume that? Thus far, every new generation has proved the exact opposite. Also, there *could* be a repeat of the 4850, which launched at $200 but could be had for $150 within a week of launch.

not every new gen is twice as fast as the last.

I'd wait, no reason to rush on old tech when new cards are around a month away as it is most likely the 24th and not the 10th. If you can save money after a price drop, or get new tech around the same price, why not?

actually it has been within 1-2% of perfect scaling in some rare scenarios.

Such as? Link? Highest I ever remember seeing was like 80%. Not saying you are lying or anything, just curious :)

But I'm sure for every near perfect scaling there are twice as many negative scalings :D

too lazy to look for links but I promise it has happened on more than one occasion.

I have 2 Toxic 4890's in CF and it works in some games and not in others.
It will only work in Crysis for instance if I type r_MultiGPU=1 in the game.cfg
Far Cry dosn't have any problems at all. But COD4 only gives me 10 fps more when multi gpu is enabled and Gears of War doesn't give me any crossfire support at all. Do any of you know what to do to program the software to force full CF functunallity? I have 9.8 CCC, and the latest BIOS.

System Specs

2.6 Ghz AMD Phenom 9995 Black Edition
two 4890s in CF
1250w Evo Galaxy
K9A2 Platinum Motherboard
800Mhz Ram 8GB
7200 RPM SAMSUNG Hardrive

what res are you running at? that cpu is really a pretty slow one to be pushing two 4890s with. theres no doubt a faster cpu would help a lot in many games. to be honest you probably arent even getting close to 50% of what that second card could do especially if you are below 1920x1200.

CrossFire FAQ's

-Not all titles take full advantage of CrossFire, however AMD is continually trying to increase and improve application compatibility, there are titles where limited scaling is observed, sometimes this is just due to application limitations

-You also have to consider hardware limitations, if your computer cannot provide enough rendering information to the video cards you won't be able to harness maximum video processing power
