Good morning,

I'm building a custom case, that will need to fit every video card out currently, and out in the near future as well.

Does anyone know what the current biggest card on the market is? 8800GTX still? And what's the size? If it's the 8800GTX, I've seen multiple sources giving different numbers, from 289mm to 264mm. (To clarify, size of PCB is what I'm looking for)

4850X2, ~11.75 inches (some sites say 11.5 inches and others 11.2)
GTX 295 and 4870X2 are 10.5 inches.

Indeed.
The 4850 X2 is the longest card ever released as far as I know.
I heard it's about 11.25 inches.. not sure though. 11.75 is probably right.
 
Wow, holy shit, there is absolutely no way I'm ever going to get that to fit while maintaining the necessary form factor.

Guess I'll have to settle for 10.5"

Why was the 7900GX2 so much longer than the 7950GX2? Crazy.
 
I now must ask...

Why don't the manufacturers just add height if they need more surface area? Why make the card impossible to fit into many cases?
 
Was the 7900GX2 ever released to the public?
I'm pretty sure it wasn't, thus I said that the 4850X2 is the longest.

Look in your case. There's not that much space above the card slots, I guarantee it. Some, sure, but not much. Case width can vary greatly, so chances are by making a card that's abnormally tall you'd actually be eliminating more of your clientele than if you made a very long card.

I don't know if the new cases still do it, but it would make fitting impossible on the cases that have a exhaust fan on the side panel.

The 7900GX2 was essentially the same card as the 7950GX2, just in a longer form.
The 7950GX2 was a bit more practical in terms of sizing =p
 
With a total length of 28.5 cm it (the 4850X2) is even longer than the HD 4870 X2 (left) and the GeForce GTX 280 (right).

28.5 cm = 11.2 inches.

If I were the OP, I'd really try to go for allowing 11.25 inches, because then you'll definitely be safe. You'll see from the picture that this is really not that much longer than the much more common GTX280 and 4870X2. Also, make sure to allow room for SLI/Crossfire setups. I don't think 10.5 inches is enough for a custom case these days.

There are several ways to approach allowing more room for the video card. 1) Make the case longer. 2) Make the drive cages removable in the area that the video cards might intrude into. 3) Have sideways mounting hard drives.

I saw a brief mention somewhere that the longest video card of any sort ever made was 14 inches, but it did not mention what card that was. I have vague memories that this must be referring to some professional video editing cards - quite a bit different from gaming video cards.
 
This card is about 1" shorter than a full length slot.
Comparison card is my old Matrox Millennium II

4850x2 in antec 900, much wider than evga x58sli, had to remove hard drives that were adjacent to it.
