Large temperature gap between cores

I've remounted my water block a few times now, but I'm still seeing one core reach about 10C higher than the others. What gives?
 
How does the block/cpu look when you seperate em? If it looks even, then it will prob be something else other than the cooling.

Also, what do you mean 10C higher, idle temps? Load temps?
 
What cpu? What block? What TIM?

I am assuming since you have been around a while you know how to apply TIM. The surface of the quads is not flat, but has a concave. Some blocks have concave to match this and some do not.

It is pretty obvious you are not getting uniform contact.

I lapped mine for this reason...
 
Q6600. Apogee GTZ. Arctic Silver 5 (I think).

Who knows if I applied it right. I followed the instructions for Core 2 Quads on Arctic Silver's website as far as the line was concerned, and left a line about as thick as rice. It's always the same core that's getting the hottest. Could my temperature gauge just be faulty or misaligned?

Coverage appears to be pretty uniform. The 10 degree difference is during idle temps, and during load, the gap is closed somewhat, but not enough.
 
Idle might not matter as much as load, if the diff is still a pretty nice gap during load, something is up.
 
What is the gap at load? Around 5c? My 920 had about a 3-5c gap before I tore it down for water cooling. Havent had the chance to get it running again.
 
That is not too bad of a gap. 10C IMO is something to look into, but that range is typically normal. What are you using? Realtemp? Try running prime blend and see what you get.
 
What are you using to monitor your temps? Realtemp? What do you have your Tj-Max values set to?

As for the odd ball cores, you are getting uneven mounting pressure. Is the back mounting plate flat, or, is it bumped up on any resistors? Also, try multiple mounts changing orientation. I've seen people go through several remounts until the cores were within 2c of each other. I think the GTZ has a slight bow to it, so mounting orientation is critical.

I mounted the GTZ as shown in the manual, so there shouldn't be a problem. Some of the mounting thumbscrews are easier to turn than others, while some give me a bit of trouble.

I understand you followed the instructions Swiftech outlines, but not all mounts are created equal. Variances in motherboard thickness, resistor locations on the bottom of the board could cause uneven mounting pressure which will result in core temps that vary. When you load this sucker up to 100%, do the cores settle in line, or are the differences between the cores still present?

I'd still think that it calls for a remount. Try unscrewing the block, turning it 90 degrees and remounting. Or at the very least, undo all 4 screws and look at what the thermal paste is actually making contact with the CPU core and the GTZ. If you see bare spots, then it could show a mounting problem.
