All,
Have tried searching to no avail. The situation is this: I want to buy a laptop for my mother (age 76) for Xmas. She had cataract surgery that went poorly, and is currently blind in one eye. She also has a significant amount of trouble using a computer generally, but loves to send email and browse certain websites.

I want to get her a laptop with a 17" or higher with high def screen, and increase the font size all the way around so she has an easier time with using it and seeing everything on the screen in case they can't fix her eye.

I am looking for advice since I typically buy Dell laptops. Her current Dell (an old Inspiron) is so slow that it is agonizing and that actually causes her not to use it.

Generally, this is what I am thinking:

17" screen or better with best definition available
Size/weight does not matter (although thinner and lighter would be nice)
Windows 7 (preferably 64 bit)
Touchpad only (since that it what she is used to)
Good customer service

I would like to stay under $1500, and would certainly welcome other brands. I know everyone may have recommendations, but I am wondering the best you can get considering the user.

Thanks in advance.

I am in a similar situation with my dad. My plan is to get a HP dv8t which is a 18.4 inch screen with 1920x1080 screen resolution. I then plan to HDMI it through their 42 LCD TV at its native resolution so it will be clear and sharp. It is about $1250.00 ++. Way more computer than needed because they do about the same thing your mom does. My choice is entirely driven by the graphics ability. They WLL get one for Christmas, I am just hoping for a better price in the next few days before pulling the trigger. Hope this helps

Take a look at the HP Pavilion dv7t series.

It got fairly good reviews (havn't used one myself). There are free upgrades fro 4gigs of RAM (need to upgrade to 64bit which is +$75), and 320gig HDD. The screen is HD LED lit. 1600x1200 res. Starting price is $749.99.

Sony VAIO FW series has a 1080P screen, starts at $800+.

Thank you very much for the replies. I am purposefully staying away from the Sony because of the keyboard. I reviewed each of the sites noted above and have come up with a list of similar or identical laptops based on the recommendations.

Are there any thoughts between these laptops? I may try to get full 1080p if available on any of them, but thought you all may have opinions on the brands and/or models. Thanks again.

I have the hp dv8t and it is pretty amazing. Probably too much for your mother but this way it will last her for about 10 yrs.

Thank you. That is actually the reason I went went the dv7, primarily because the dv8 is likely more than she needs. Is there a screen/display difference that would justify the price?

At the moment, I am leaning toward either the HP or the Toshiba. Both seem like good values. The Toshiba screen is bigger (18) and has a backlit keyboard. The HP is a little cheaper. But I really don't know anything about HP or Toshibas.

Thanks again.
