Large file transfer locks up hard drive

I’m at my wits end on this one. It’s the worst build I’ve ever had. There seems to be something wrong with the ICH9 controller but no one will admit to it.

It started with an Intel X48 DFI board and after three of those had the same issue I tried a Gigabyte board GA-X48-DS5 with two WD Velociraptors. I set them up in RAID 0 but every day or so the second drive would have errors in the Intel RAID software. Even after swapping the drives it would always be drive 1 with the error. I’d also have random crashing. After going through all the rebuilds swapping cables and not getting any help from Intel, WD, DFI or Gigabyte I gave up and broke up the RAID. All the individual drive test were always fine.

There was nonsense at the time about the WD not wanting you use the drive in RAID and that you had to buy their RAID “certified” drives that they had enabled or disabled their TLER function in software.

After the breakup, for a long time everything seemed to be fine and then my 1TB dive locked up a few times during large file transfers. I now have 6 or so 1 and 2 TB drives and I randomly get theses lock ups during large file transfers.

Any ideas? After all this time I’m wondering if maybe the power supply is doing it. Not giving the drive the correct amount of power. I’ve changed the motherboard (many times), RAM and cables only the CPU and power supply have stayed the same.

I had this issue with my old QX6700/XBX2 Intel board. The on board controllers were shit. I solved it by not using it for not purpose any more

That's totally a controller problem. If anyone else tells you otherwise, stick it to them!
