I'm planning on buying a 500Gb Seagate hdd. Right now I have a 160Gb UltraATA hdd and had no problems at all with it (for more than three years). The thing is I don't know how these new larger drives are in terms or reliability or if a 320Gb IDE hdd is more reliable than a 320Gb SATA or vice versa.

Any advice and comment is welcome.

the quality/reliability of a drive matters on which brand/type you buy whether you buy hdds designed for a sometimes on sometimes off desktop machine versus 24/7 server hdds...

300gb+ drives are no more or less reliable than their smaller counterparts of similar specs... so i say UPSIZE YOUR COMBO

SATA/IDE shouldn't matter either it's just an interface/protocol not a part that breaks down often with hdds... its the (heads / platters / power / motor) that usually go on hdds...

I would say reliability has been improved. As above, it really depends on the exact drive you are buying and wether it's an enterprise drive or a home based drive.

Also, no matter how reliable a device is, it CAN fail, so as always, backup everything.
