Laptops wireless slower than smartphone

I have two laptops, different brands and technology, different intel wireless cards. One is a 2016 laptop with an Intel ac7265.

I have tried different drivers but my smartphone a ZTE nubia, always gets a signar where my laptops don't. Is this a driver issue or just that recent smartphones have better wifi antennas?
 
Laptop antennas are generally better. This could be a driver issue... I would clear them out and reinstall latest.

Is this for AC?

I had / have a 7265 and it sucked. Switched to Broadcom after dropouts and issues with the connection speed dipping randomly. Haven't had an issue since
