I have a Tobisha Satellite 1415-S173 with win xp home. When i turn on the laptop it shows the toshiba screen, windows xp home screen then about 20minutes at the windows is now starting blue screen and it loads my desktop, then i get the ntsystem/authority will shut down this system in 00:59 message. If i boot into safe mode and go in as admin it loads the desktop but with no startbar loads then all of a sudden i see for a split second system faliure and it shuts down and turns itself back on. Is there anyway to save this without formatting??? Thanks

Does it sound like your fans are spinning constantly at high speed? Toshibas are notorious for having easily clogged heatsinks and this causes the system to lock up and/or shut down. There should be a hatch on the bottom of the case that provides access to the CPU/heatsink to clean it out. I know I need to clean my girlfriend's toshiba out once per year or it gets really bad.

But it also sounds like your OS could be corrupted. If you do a repair installation from the windows CD, you may be able to recover most of your stuff.
