Hey everyone, I've got my PSP preordered and a new computer/laptop on the way, I don't have an amazing grasp on wireless connections, I'm more on the hardware side of desktop computers.
I just need to know something, if I have a laptop connected to the internet through my wired cable modem through the ethernet port, can the PSP access the internet through the laptops wireless features?

For example

Internet<----->Cable Modem<----->Laptop ))))) PSP

So I have a laptop with internet access and the laptop relays the internet to the PSP as if it was a 'hot-spot'?

Thanks for your time!

good question, I have a psp and ive got a laptop on order so I also would like to know this

Im pretty sure you can, you just need to enable internet connection sharing on the laptop and set up your wireless for Ad-hoc(computer to computer wireless). However i dunno if the PSP supports that. Someone else here will probably know.

With firmware 2.0 the PSP now has a built-in web browser...all you need to do is set the wireless to infrastructure mode and then you can use the internet like that if you have a wireless router set-up. you dont have to go through the laptop to be able to use the internet on psp.

I'm pretty sure the PSP has Ad Hoc support (How else are they supposed to WLAN between each other without an Access Point?) However, it'd just be simpler to get a Wireless Router. They're like $60 these days.

Hey again, thanks for all the replies.

I'm hearing a wireless router being mentioned, but the thing is I've been planning on getting a laptop through my work, its a new Home Computing Initiative where I can get a brand new IBM laptop for £XX amount of reduction off my wages, and the one I'm looking at is the one with wireless support.

I don't plan on gaming anymore cos I'm kinda growing out of it, but the laptop will be there connected to my cable modem through an ethernet port.

Don't think I'm getting a laptop just for the PSP, it's for all the family and the wireless will be there for the PSP only, so instead of a wireless router I'll be getting a new laptop aswell.....how does that sound?

Still the wireless router is $60 (prolly 60 quid where you are) and it works alot better than a software firewall.

So how does a wireless router work exactly?

I assume it's just a 'hot-spot' where my PSP can access the internet?

Whats the advantages of this, rather then use the laptop?

Thanks for all your help!

Chris =D

Here are the advantages of a wireless router:

The connection would go like this -

This allows you to use both your laptop and your PSP independently, and NOT have to rely on the laptop being plugged in and powered on, just to use your PSP.

Also, with a wireless router, you can connect wirelessly with your laptop and be able to sit on the couch or bed or wherever in your home/apartment and use it as a mobile device, not just something teathered to the cable modem. This actually provides an extra layer of security as well, assuming you setup WPA or WEP encryption in your router.

Just as a side note, I bought a dlink Wireless G router, from Circuit city, for $20 with a $20 mail in rebate... you ought to be able to get a wireless router cheap... really (I don't live in the UK so I'm not certain on prices there, but if it is anything like here, with the right deal they realy are dirt cheap.)
