Looking to get a new laptop. Mostly it will be used for getting online while away from home and/or playing movies occasionally. I don't need a powerhouse for gaming but want something reasonably performant. Also what's most important is the display. I want a good quality display. My last laptop purchase was great except for the display which sucked and I don't want to make that mistake again.

Don't really have a set budget but don't want to go cheap and don't want to break the bank either. Any suggestions I'd love to hear them so I can make a purchase fairly soon.

Wanted to check since this poste has been revived: are you still looking?

My inclination would be toward a MacBook Air (M4 if you can, but a refurb M3 would also be dandy). It's fast for those purposes, lasts ages on battery, has a good (if 60Hz) display, and as a fanless system is completely silent. A MacBook Pro if you really crave 120Hz or mini-LED, but it might be overkill.

Of course, this also depends on how open you are to using a Mac, whether or not you have other Apple devices (the ecosystem integration helps), and your must-run software. I'm happy to point you to a Windows machine if that'll work better.
 
Agreed ^^ I am not a Mac guy but the MacBook Air M4 is amazing and a relatively good price. One of the best laptops I have ever had, that has great battery life, incredible performance and can play most games that I like through Steam. With that being said, MacOS is hot garbage.
 
Another vote for the MacBook Air. I bought the M3 24/512 13" this past January. It's easily the best laptop I've ever owned. I prefer Windows, but like MacOS, too. Each has its strengths/weaknesses. I'd recommend getting AppleCare, too. It's $69/year and is good for as long as you own the machine.

MacOS has its oddities, but I wouldn't call it "hot garbage." When I use Windows it's still wild how pushy it is with notifications and even ads. That and Microsoft still has issues with things like power management and an intuitive settings section, among other things. It's fine, but not immune to eccentricities of its own.

Part of it is just that we spend so much time using a given OS that we get used to its quirks and find switching awkward.
 
for internet and movies a mac would be fine too. and once you install a media player, your prefered browser and get used to the os, itll be just fine.

Yeah, definitely going to be subjective. I feel like MacOS tells you how to use your OS instead of you telling the OS what you need done. Small things like not being able to resize the settings menu and some of the UI choices, drive me crazy.
 
Good bash/zsh support (POSIX-compliant), strong virtualization capability goes a long way to make sure MacOS cannot be garbage

Sorry, forgot to give an update on this. Ended up going with a HP Pro Book H11 from amazon. So far I'm pretty happy with it. I really wanted something with a better display but the only way I could seem to do that was to purchase a very expensive laptop. In the end I'm happy with this one as is and would have no problem recommending it to someone looking for something similar. This will probably be my last windows laptop I purchase though, I see a linux box/laptop in my future.

Nice! I have an older HP ProBook G5 and its an excellent laptop. Rock solid and still gets bios updates in 2025 (I bought it in 2019). Its still does a great job these days with POP OS installed.

My go-to would be the Lenovo ThinkPad X9 — any model, really. It ticks all those checkboxes. The X9 15 (the 15p is overkill) is the sweet spot.

There's also the Yoga Slim series, but that tends to be pricier due to the convertible touchscreen design.
