Short story is I now have a dell Inspiron 1100 in my hands and it has a few minor problems. I managed to fix the hard drive issue by replacing it. Now it has a problem where the LCD sometimes changes color. if I press on the laptop the black will turn to green, press agian, yellow, agian, red or back to normal. If I plug the vga port into a normal working monitor this color fluctuation goes away. I know its not a drive problem because it shows up before I install windows. or when I'm in the bios. Does anyone have any idea where I should start?

It sounds like the LCD cable is not properly connected to the motherboard. The service manual has instructions for how to remove and replace the display for the Inspiron 1100. If it is a loose connection all you should have to do is open up the system and reseat the motherboard end of the LCD ribbon cable.

If you have any questions on the system or the service manual I'll be happy to answer them.
