Laptop SSD question

I rarely ever deal with laptops. What do I need to know to swap out a laptop SATA drive for a SSD?
I want to give one to a friend to upgrade his old laptop and buy him some time. Something in the 180 Gig range will work.
 
^Which laptop? If it has a standard 2.5" laptop HDD interface, an Intel 180GB or Samsung EVO will work just fine.
 
Find out the model of their laptop and what interface it has for its hard drive.

If its a netbook it is probably going to be a pci-e 1x ssd

If its a laptop and isn't older than the sun it should take a normal 2.5" sata drive, in which case you can use just about any of the standard SSD's out there.

If its older than the sun then it probably takes 2.5 inch IDE drives, I doubt you'd be able to find an ssd for it, and tbh, it wouldn't help as much as an upgrade, at that age the laptop is probably sporting a p3 or worse.
 
Thanks guys, it is for a standard Toshiba, not a netbook and it has a SATA drive. I was hoping I could just shop on the H for a 180gig brand anything, clone it the old HD in a dock, and pop it in. I had read that early on there were issues with the SSDs being too thick to close the HD cover.
 
Also make note that some laptops have 9.5mm bays for HDDs and some (like my Lenovo T430) have 7mm bays.
