Wanted to throw this wierd situation out there to see if anybody has any thoughts.
Unfortunate disclaimer, this is my sister-in-law's HP pavillion zv5000 laptop, and had a bunch of spyware/malicious stuff on it and she tried to reinstall windows. I have no record of exactly what malicious software was on here, and not sure if there is a way to find out.
So that is all behind us, but here is the wierd part:
The PC will just crash at different times as you boot to Windows XP. The longest i've been able to keep it on was about 5 minutes booting to safe mode w/ commnad prompt
But often i cant even get to the prompt.
If i get to the BIOS and run a HDD check, it passes the short check, but won't run the more detailed check.
So i am somewhat suspicious of the state of the HDD.
If i boot from the XP install disc in the CD drive though i also will get these random rapid power shutdowns.
any thoughts other than throwing this in the trash? been to HP, windows, symantec, and a number of other sites trying to find a solution, w/ no luck.
thanks!
