is it possible to buy a laptop lcd and connect it to a desktop??? like in the side of the case or something? there is alot of used laptop screens on ebay... so i was thinking for my server maybe mod the screen into the side of the case... just wanna know if its possible? and if so... how?

if not a laptop lcd... then anyone know of a cheap lcd screen (new or used) probly under 100 bucks (including whatever is needed to make it work)
 
i remember reading in the forums that you have to have like a control thing for the lcd that costs a lot of money or something...someone else will explain i dont really feel like typing it all :(

You need to source a compatible LCD controller which takes a popular input type (VGA, DVI, S-video, etc.) and converts it into the specialized digital interface and signalling characteristic that the specific LCD uses. You also need an inverter to convert a DC voltage into the high-voltage (>1000 volts) AC required by the cold cathode fluorescent backlight for the LCD.

The controller can be somewhat difficult to find, depending on the vintage of the LCD, but the controller alone will cost somewhere between $70 and $300 US. Then there are often difficulties with finding a suitable connector and wiring harness for the LCD to controller connection. The inverter is usually less difficult to find, but you still need the LCD datasheet to determine pin assignments and inverter requirements.

Basically, it's an advanced project but definitely attainable. I've done it for about $175 but I consider myself lucky. It also helps that I did a lot of research into this project; maybe you aren't willing to do that.

Define some requirements.

How big?
Color or monochrome?
Graphic or text?
Connection requirements? Do you want VGA, DVI, serial, parallel, USB, etc?
Speed requirements? Will you display full-screen video, static graphics, or something in between?
 
i was looking for something to put on the side of my case... of my server or something.... just an idea....so i can put my server somewhere and not have abig monitor there to....

i was just looking up lcd's on ebay.. and there seemed to be alot of laptop ones...for cheap
 
Just save yourself the trouble an buy a pre-made LCD monitor, then strip the parts out as you'd like. It saves you time since you don't have to do any soldering or searching for a controller and inverter to match the LCD. It might also be cheaper.
 
No, I'm talking about any regular LCD monitor you can buy. Just open one up, take out the LCD panel and supporting hardware, and mount them where you like. Most of the work is already done for you.

oh... yeah i could do that... or just mount it to the side... not even have to brake it open.... now if i could find a cheap cheap one... under 100 bucks...new or used... size doesnt matter
 
The CTX PanoView 540, a 10.4" LCD with 640x480 native resolution, frequently goes on eBay for $100 or less.
