Any recommendations for a good drive?The king of mobile hard drive performance right now is the Hitachi 7K60 - It's a 7200RPM monster, and none of the 5400RPM drives on the market come close. However, there's quite a crunch on supply of them, so the vendors that do have them are charging a pretty penny for them.
There's no reason not to get at least a 5400RPM drive with an 8MB buffer, as they are shipping in enough volume now to drive prices down - some of the 5400/8MB drive are cheaper than 4200RPM counterparts. Price wise, 80GB is the sweet capacity spot, although he may not want/need a drive that big.
I am not an expert on mobile hard drives, but I've heard that Toshiba and Fujitsu are average, and that Hitachi and Samsung are pretty good. Seagate and WD both make mobile drives now, and I've heard that they are pretty solid. Seagate does have the advantage of their across the board five year warranty.
You can get this 60GB Samsung for less than $90. The cheapest 2.5" drive that ZZF carries is over $60, and it's a paltry 20GB, making 60GB for $90 a pretty solid value, especially when you get 5400RPM and 8MB buffer for not much money. It will be MUCH faster than what he had before. If I was buying, I'd get the 60 or 80GB Samsung.
