Heya all, ive been out of the " computer" news for a while, and am now looking at buying a new gaming laptop and was wondering if anyone could give me some hints.

Ive been looking at a Dell M1710 XPS with a Core 2 Duo T7200, 1 gig of ram (dells ram is way overpriced), gforce Go 7950 GTX,

or and Alienware M9700 with an AMD turion 64 mobile ml40 2.2g, 1 gig ram, sli 512mb nivida gforce go 7900 gs.


my question is, what is the huge difference between the AMD and the Intel core duo, ive heard the core duo blow any other chip out of the water. These computers have a 100 dollar difference. Just wondering what would be the better deal.

Aslo, if anyone else has any other suggestions for a laptop betwee 2000-2700 id apperciate the information. Im looking for a system that will be used for both school work (heavy IT and Multimedia and Design) and gaming. Thank you in advance.
 
How about links to the laptops you're torn on. I need to see things like screen sizes/resolution, and most importanly, where thy chose to put the 'del' key before I can make any recommendation.

What im really wondering is how the AMD chip compares to the Duo chip, are they similar in design and performance? or does one out play the other one?

I don't have a laptop (no funds for one), but with Dell owning Alienware, to me it's half of one, six of the other.

Any laptop running the Intel Core 2 kicks ass all over the board right now. It outperforms and uses less power. I hate to say it, but Intel right now is at the top of the pile -and by quite a hefty margin for a change.
 
that alienware is a horrible buy. You missed the deal where they offered a free SLI upgrade, a $400 value. And even if you did get that deal, 2 7900gs don't really beat 1 7950gtx. And that single core processor is fine now, but in the future, more porgrams will be multi threaded and be able to use more cpu cores.

The dell you selected is a decent choice, but you're going to pay a nice premium. If you want to keep the price low i recommend buying from the outlet or a reseller in the buy or sell section (kind of makes me wonder why hardocp picked to review an overpriced dell system, they could have used a coupon, or the epp discount or used the outlet. not what i call a savvy consumer...)

anyways...

Check the outlet out and look for an m1710 with a 7900gtx/7950gtx or an m90 with a 2500m video card. You might have to look there for a week to find a good deal. Keep in mind that it usually ships the same day, so you'll still get your system faster than if you ordered a new one.

There's also another option and that's clevo. Some of the alienware laptops are actually rebranded clevos. A few on the velocity micro link posted previously are also rebranded clevos.

Might I suggest a few clevo resellers (which are cheaper than the velocity micro)

Ok, thanks, yah ive been watching the outlet store quite frequently looking for a laptop that will do.

as for clevo, how dependalbe are they? ive never heard of this brand before, but some of the deals ive found intising.

they make quality high end laptops, alienware uses some of their models and so does velocity micro. the only thing i'd be weary of is buying laptops with desktop processors in them, as they have a track record of breaking down more often. Get something with a core 2 duo and you'll be fine.
