I have Sony Vio (PGC33m) notebook. and suddenly noticed that the laptop does not start with the power cable or the battery does not charge. sometimes if I push the power cable with some force and fiddle about with it the laptop would start (power goes to the laptop). but I would need to hold the cable in that position there with the same force. if I let go the power would go off even though the cable is connected to the laptop.

The power jack on most laptops is one of the single most common points of failure. If you can get to it and know your way around a soldering iron it is typically very easy to fix. One of more legs has probably come loose from the main board.
