I got this Compaq Presario 2700 (1gig celeron, 256 RAM)here for 100 bucks. Was just wondering if it was safe to take to top on the case of by the screen and would it be safe to paint or mod it at all. Thanks :)

Oh and if anyone has links thanks in advance.

I repair quite a few laptops where i work and have never had any problem taking them apart.

Just make sure to note every ribbon cable and screw that you remove.
Take digital pictures if possible, as i have had to completely disassemble one just to find what I had missed.

Painting should be no problem really, just make sure you take any sensitive eletronics out before painting, IE touchpad and mouse buttons.
But the case itself should be fine to paint.

Modding anything else will be tough as everything is really really shoehorned in there.

Are you just going to give it a paintjob? Its perfectly fine to take it apart, just be careful and ground yourself. That's a great little find - around here a lappy like that would cost nearly $300.

I think im just gonna pait the top for now, i dont like the compag logo on it heh. Thanks a lot im gonna try :)

painters tape... lots and lots of painters tape.. tape everything you dont want painted even if you think its impoccible.. trust me.. its poccible

Was going to paint and add LED's to my Laptop. So far I have bought most of the equipment for the painting (checked some of the guides online), but I am not sure what I will need for the LED's.

Quick Question, What power source could I use for the LED's? Or would I just just give them a seperate power source (would be a bit bulky and inconvenient).

If anyone has a link or can help explain it would be great! Thanx

USB would be safe/easy way to power LEDs.

could either solder something directly to the motherboard,
or just have a male connector sticking out of your laptop that you plug into the female USB port when you want the LEDs to be on.

Thank you for the fast reply. This sounds pretty good, and shouldnt be too hard to do. Is there anything I should be aware of when using the USB for power?

I read the LED section in the sticky at the top which was a lot of help!

Thanks again ChingChang,

I will post a few pictures in the Gallery once I get all this done, hopefully it will look sharp!
