OK, i have this laptop that has a bad keyboard. I'm going to run it through the dishwasher, might fix it, but thats not the point. the point is I have this extra laptop and I want to mod it. I was thinking about a carputer...trying to sell the screen, some extra parts, so I can get a smaller touchscreen...make it into a carputer.

Specs:

Celeron 633 mhz
256 mc PC100 (I think, it has 128, I put another 128 in but I forgot my PSU at home so I cant even see if it accepts it)
6 gig drive
CDROM (might swap out the DVD player in my other laptop I never use)
USB
VGA
Parallel port
No network, but I would put a wireless card in anyway and use a USB NIC if needed
No serial

The battery is dead so I'd also have to get an AC adapter (since this didnt come with one, i got it real cheap). Id want to upgrade the hard drive if I was making it a MP3 computer, I would use my IDE->USB converter but that has been known to corrupt transferring data (mightve been something else who knows).

Suggestions for what to do? I would make a custom case if it was a carputer but that would ALSO require me to pull out my head unit and put an input harness on, and honestly I dont know where the box is so I dont even have any harness to put in.

There are a few go-arounds: You can leave the head unit and use a small FM transmitter to stream audio to your radio. You also want a DC adapter so you can hard wire it to your car's power system. Also, a small touch screen would be ideal for this application. Otherwise, you will have to find some way to mod a keyboard and mouse into your steering wheel :D

Wireless network would be great because you could simply park the car in the garage and upload songs to it from another computer.

Horray for less wires!

Power supply.

Touch screen, probably the most expensive thing on the list.

Am I missing anything?

wireless im taken care of, I have two adapters. I just got the adapter and powered it on, max this can take is 196 megs of ram  lame but enough for dvds, etc. it reacts fine to having everything but harddrive stripped out.

the power supply is the issue. i cant get around that no matter what. ill have to get some DC-DC action or something, i dont know.

also the screen on this thing SUCKS ASS. 800x600 with a ton of ghosting, and its seriously 3x heavier than the rest of the laptop. its definitly coming off and getting sold.

finally, it does run cool as it is, but im thinking of upgrading the proc. i probabily wont since 633 is plenty for MP3's and movies and whatnot.
