I'm wanting to put this LCD screen I pulled off an old laptop and use it on the side or behind the window of a computer I'll be using for a server. It'll make for easy transport to lan parties and such. I know this mod has been done I just need some help finding research material. I can't use the controller because its integrated w/ the rest of the mobo.. I have 2 small connectors coming from the display. thanx

Okay, first thing you'll need to do is find out what the manufacturer of the LCD module is, and the model. Pull off the plastic bezel and the information should be on the back of the LCD module.

Do you have the small circuit board which connects to one of the LCD's two cables? The cable with many tiny wires is the data interface, and the cable with probably two bigger wires is the inverter cable for the backlight.

Thanks for the info xonik. That sort of comment actually helps me figure out what I'm doing lol. ~edit~ the circuit board which the lcd connects to is integrated to the mainboard.

It's pretty much guaranteed that the LCD module will connect to a mainboard-based LCD driver/controller circuit in the case of notebook computers. Still, you should also be looking for a tiny circuit board that the 2-pin connector from the LCD will plug into. It's the inverter board for the cold cathode fluorescent backlight.

Finally, you'll need to find the make and model of the LCD. This will narrow down which controller boards--if any--will connect to your LCD.

I hope you're not taking my advice as a sign of hope that your LCD will work as an external monitor. I can't control that aspect of your project, but what I can do is help direct you to a solution if there is one out there.

Interestingly enough, there is a thread over at bit-tech that explains how to connect certain LCDs to the VESA connector on older PCI video cards. It's only 16 Colors, but it's still something. I'm not sure where it went, though.

if you find the link rosonowski i am trying to do the same thing with some old monochrome laptop lcds that would really help

thanks zonik i just realized that theyve updated the lcd faq, and theres a link on hooking it up to a graphics card. Also, the entire translation of that site is posted somewhere in there.
