Hello

I am very sad at the moment today i broke my second Laptop LCD panel in about 2 months. needless to say this is getting very expencive and very frustrating. in both situations the laptop was not abused and was only very lightly tapped on the back of the LCD monitor but both times resulted in a destroyed screen. im under the impression that the caseing on this particular laptop is far from protective at this point as in my opinion neither event should have had enough force to damage the screens if the outer shell had offered any protection at all.

my question thus follows, does anyone know of any products that will attatch to my laptop lcd that will offer it more protection. perhaps a metal case of some sort that will encase the screen and protect it? i dont care about looks i dont care about weight i dont give a damn about anything as long as it will protect my laptops screen!

if something like this doesnt exist then in the spirit of the case modding forum can anyone give me any ideas on how i might build my own protective armour for my laptop

the machine in question is a
Sager 4880
screen part number CLAA150pb01

HELP ME I DONT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN AGAIN!

Simplest thing I can think of would be a steel or aluminum cutout on the top that is 1/16" or so. Polish it up, put a logo on it. Wouldn't be that bad looking and I'm sure it'd offer some sort of protection from tapping.

how about a less fragile laptop? i've seen laptops and shit fall off desks onto hardwood floors and come out unscathed.

I have seen my wife get so frustrated that she literally threw her laptop across the living room, and all that happened was the screen bezel needed to be snapped back together.

Honestly it looks like your applying pressure to the back of the screen lid, my suggestion to stop this happening again. Go to an place that deals with aluminum and have them make a replica of your lid.

Dude.. good thing your wife doesn't work with kids.
As far as your laptop problem is concerned, does this happen when you're travelling with your laptop, as in your bag?

Nah.. kids snap back together pretty easily too.

It would be cool if you could get a thin stamped sheet aluminum cover that would just fit over the shape of the case. Like a metal skin basically. If you had access to sheet metal working tools (i.e. auto body shop?) this might be a possibility. That comes to mind because I was thinking about doing something similar for a PSP.

I've dropped my iBook from around 5 feet, and all I needed to do was, well, nothing!

Eh. I tought our IBMs at school were fragile, but I once managed to step on one of my frineds and didn't do any harm to it, my weight wasn't totally on it but still.

I am going to have to agree with everyone here, what could you have possibly tapped it with? Damn Man, never had a problem with any laptop I have ever worked on, sounds like no protection on your laptop at all.

I repair laptop screens, and looking at that picture, thats not a problem with the lcd itself. You get that kind of vertical banding when you have a problem with your flex data cable. This is the cable that connects the lcd to the mobo.

Its quite possible that a tap, in the wrong place, if the laptop was poorly designed could cause a separation of the flex data cable from either end. Id look into that

no, that definately cracked. the black spots of whatever wouldn't be caused by a loosed cable.

A girl I know's Dad bought some weird case thing for her laptop. Supposedly it is really indestructible. I will have to get back to you with the name though... I have seen it, and it completely surrounds the whole laptop, and it closes and locks I think..

that diagonal line in the screen is a crack... he cracked the screen...

I was just about to suggest that. And to come back to our IBMs at school. We are very very very careful with the screen's on them. We have a complete warranty on the laptops from IBM, the screens though aren't warrantied and they cost 800$CAN a piece. I know of a guy at school who's gone through 3 of them already.

It looks like the "light tap" was at the bottom left border of the screen where the crease is. No "light tap" could get though that specific area to make a spider that large. Either you arent telling us what you did or you have a REALLY weak laptop design.

Honestly, I think someone tried to pick-up or move said laptop by applying a small bit of pressure to the back of the lid....and by small bit, I mean a tad too much...and by a tad to much, I mean a whole hell of a lot.

Tapped by the car...

Lenovo / IBM laptops with the Titanium casing are very durable, but don't trust the Active Hard Drive protection. It's not 100%. They like to boast about it but I use to work as a demonstrator for the company, you really can't rely on it.

Do you transport the notebook in a bag? maybe it squeezes the screen...

Been there, done that. My T42 had nice imprints of the trackpoint and the edges of the key's on the screen, was only visible at odd angles or in sunlight though, so no big deal (except for when I decided to clean the screen, then it would show).

I cannot beleive the kind of crap the guys here at work put our laptops through. It amazes me to see how they can destroy a brand new laptop in 3 months but yet mine still looks brand new in three months. Some people should just not be allowed to handle certian things.

You repair laptops and missed the diagonal HUGE crack and liquid crystal running along the crack?

As far as the protection, honestly it must be more than "taps" on the back screen. Even the screen has a piece of metal directly behind the glass substrate. Not rocket science, just be more careful. Sounds like you need a briefcase PC or a tablet PC. The front screen on a MotionComputing tablet for instance is VERY tough. One of their demonstrations is dropping the tablet on it's screen side and punching the front of the screen to show how durable they built it's protection.

the screen is indeed cracked to hell
that was a picture of the first time it broke ill attatch a picture of its current brokeness

also ive got a video of me lightly pushing on the back of the screen to show how weak it actually is. is there a spot online i can drop a movie (500KB) that the forum can see it?

the laptop did start its life well its come with me across north america (Victotoria BC Canada) to orlando florida on a business trip as well as from Victoria to Holland and then a trek around europe

it lasted through that fine. but now its broken and annoying and it makes me sad

That kind of flex is not uncommon, my guess is something is loose and not the LCD.

nothing is loose

when the flex reaches its fathest point it reaches that point becuase the plastic is then resting on the back of the lcd. if i pushed any harder it would crack the glass again

i had a desktop i replaced it with the laptop when as i mentioned above i had to go across the continent and then across the globe on business... lugging a desktop isnt that practicle for transatlantic travel :D :D

I guess that video proves the design is flawed... either that or you've got a dud, which is unlikely if the screen has been replaced already?
