Laptop HD dead?

Compaq Presario x1000(think that's only what it's called, and it's really a 14xx?)
1.5ghz centrino mobile, 512ddr, radeon 9200, windows xp.
Only known problem, battery is lifeless, lasts about 30 mins when running strictly battery

problem at hand:
boots up to the screen for choosing to enter bios, says press f10 to enter, and comes up with a screen that says

524288kb OK

1720-SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure (Failing Attr: 02)


(furthar down the page it says in a blue box and white text)

F1

IGNORE


and doesnt give me any other options, Cant even enter BIOS when pressing f10, f1 does nothing, and i dont know how to select the IGNORE option, f keys do nothing.


ANY help would be greatly appreciated, i hope i gave all the necessary information, thanks a lot
 
I would suggest you backup anything on the HD and replace it asap. Seen this several times, and those messages don't lie. Seen a few laptop HD's die within days of seeing that message.
 
okay, fair enough, thanks for the prompt advice:)

i was wondering if anyone could take a moment to explain what kind of HD im looking for to replace the one im using...?

i know that they differ from cased computers, that's for sure:)
