If people would take a second to do a little research instead of just posting whatever bullshit they feel like, they would have found that the OP's laptop has an 8800m GTS. It is NOT an onboard solution and can be upgraded with any MXM III card.
something like that, My 2 7900gs still provide great performance even if they are lacking vram.
with most laptops native res @1400 & below having huge chunks of vram isn't necessary.
A lot of people do. Unfortunately a lot of the cards there are very expensive and often bad from dead laptop pulls.I got my upgrade(different laptop) off Ebay.
yea, it's become common in the last year. for older laptops, tons of vram isn't necessary
That doesn't make sense... its just as necessary. the age of the laptop doesnt mean the screen size takes less ram, Nor do games use less vram because its on an old laptop.
I really don't think it's worth it to upgrade the laptop GPUs. From what I have seen, the laptop GPUs are very very expensive, maybe $400 or 500+ for a relatively dated laptop GPU.
Probably better to sell the laptop and buy a new one.
Laptop GPUs cannot be removed from their logic boards. Usually the only two things you can upgrade with laptops are RAM and HDD
He was saying that high resolution screens on laptops are not very common on older laptops. Higher resolutions were a premium option a few years ago, and even then it was usually 1440x900, hardly a high resolution. Higher resolutions benefit greatly by more video ram. Some older cards 7900M etc only offered 256mb of video memory but it wasn't an issue with most older laptops because most screens at that time on laptops weren't that high of a resolution. Now with 1080 being standard on most gaming laptops, 512mb is a good starting point. 1gb of video memory would be ideal.

Actually I did do a little research on it and the info I found indicated that it was MXM 2.1 type 3(which limits options) and that the GPU is soldered into the motherboard(which all but eliminates the ability to upgrade). So perhaps you should take your own advice.
What about hooking it up to an external gpu through the external pci slot?

yikes, unless it's pci-e that'd be a bad idea.
Even if the laptop did have a discrete removable GPU, it would still NOT be as simple as swaping in a new MXM3 gpu. The heatsink would have to fit perfectly to work, and that just isn't likely.
