So it turns out I can get up to 12% off dell laptops so I've been looking at those mainly. I will be an Information Systems major at Carnegie Mellon University in the fall, so the laptop is a huge part. I'm looking to spend around $1300 and I think I found a pretty decent laptop for that price. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to laptops.

I was also thinking about getting a macbook or an ibm thinkpad, but I skipped over the macbook because of worries of compatibility.
 
With money like that look at the Dell Latitude and Lenovo Thinkpads.

Not sure what kind of power you will be needing? What exactly will you be using it for?
 
I'm not looking for something extremely powerful. I'm not too worried about playing games because I have a desktop that I can use for that, though I may not even bring that... trying to break the pc gaming habit. It will be mainly used for school work, possibly some cpu intensive processes. I was also thinking about getting a tv tuner so I can watch tv in my dorm room on my 22" widescreen monitor that I can simply connect to the laptop.
 
You will love it and will even be able to play a game or two.
I used paper in college for note taking, and can't imagine taking notes with a computer in class but if note taking with a laptop does work ... I wonder about battery life with vista and the 8600GT. I suppose things can be turned down to conserve. If you don't want to game with it XPS is probably overkill.

You want to compare the price of Dell's RAM and HD basics/upgrades and compare to what you can do yourself if saving a buck or two is important.

The Wind is no competitor to the Dell you are looking at but I can imagine it filling some ultra portable role in campus life.

I know they haven't picked up a big following but I love mine. I don't have this unit, I'm still on my two year old Toshiba R25 (my third tablet) but I might pick this one up in the near future, The tablet features can be very useful, especially for note taking.

On top of that, its even cooler than a Macbook!

Sadly, I'm not too sure how well I'd enjoy a tablet PC. My handwriting is already pretty bad, probably even worse on the tablet, though I'm sure I'd be able to improve upon it. I'll probably stick to a normal laptop.
