Laptop Folding - Which Client

Laptop Specs:

Dell Vostro 1500
  • Intel T5270 1.4Ghz CPU
  • (2MB Cache, 800 MHz FSB)
  • 2GB DDR2 @ 333 Mhz
  • Windows XP

Here is the situatuion.

This laptop has been running the "notfred" linux folding cleint for about 2 months.
It was running great and I havn't even touched it since I started it back then.
It was getting about 700 - 1200 PPD which is great for this little system.

I have had to move my laptop from my folding room to the bedroom.
(I am sure like some of you, I have to have music or tv show going to get some sleep)

Now that I am using it for that, I can't run the linux distro anymore.

I guess I have a couple of options but need to know what to do.

  1. Run 2 x Uni-Processor Clients - (Boxen gets about 250 PPD doing this)
  2. Run the Windows SMP Client - PPD Unknown
  3. Install Linux on this system - (Never Tried this on a Laptop and I know almost nothing about Linux)

I assume option 3 would get the best PPD and allow me to still play multimedia, well I assume I can.

I did locate several articles and posts that my Vostro has full driver support in Ubuntu so that is good news if I go that route

Any suggestions?

 
The only way to really know if Linux would be suitable for your needs is to give it a shot yourself. I recommend you download an ISO of Ubuntu or Fedora and run it as a LiveCD for a bit to get a feel for what it's like. If you like it, then going the Linux route would probably be your best option for folding.

On the other hand, if the Linux thing doesn't work out for you, running an instance of the Windows SMP client would probably make the best use of the CPU.
 
I also found out today that I *could* upgrade my laptop cpu.
The Dell Vostro 1500 supports the new 45nm Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz 6MB L2 Cache.

That would be one heck of an upgrade. Going from 1.4ghz to 2.5ghz.

Maybe something I need to ask for to be under the Christman Tree ..

But at $300.00 an expensive upgrade ....

 
Honestly, it really isn't worth upgrading a laptop CPU unless it's your primary machine. For $300, you can literally build an entire cheap PC.

Agreed, I'm building a 10k folding box for just under 250$ :D
