Laptop floppy drive problem

Fujitsu LifeBook C-6140 laptop
Intel® Celeron 433MHz, 192MB RAM, WIN98SE

The floppy drive is not working right. I have not tested extensively but in general terms it seems to write ok but corrupts any floppy it tries to read. I assummed it was the drive itself and I replaced it but the same thing continues. I am thinking maybe the read/write signal is messed up and it writes when it should be reading although it seems to read the directory at times. What can I check? if it is not a drive issue then it would be a mobo issue and not worth repairing. . . any other ideas?
 
You can try a new floppy cable. How they go bad just sitting in a machine, I don't know, but they do.

Hmmm... it is not a regular flat cable but rather a flat, flexible, printed, cable with a microscopic connector at the other end. I suppose I could test it but it would be extremely difficult. I'll try it. Thanks for the idea.
 
If it's corrupting the disks (IE disk can't be read in any drive after it's been read by yours), the heads are out of whack on your drive. It also wouldn't be unusual for you drive to work OK, but when you take the disk out an put it in another drive it won't read. The misaligned head on your drive can write and read at the same angle, so it's off for other drives, but yours may work, esp if you format the disk on that drive...

Anyways, a bad cable shouldn't make a bad disk just by reading it, only writing. I would replace the drive, do you have any spare to test with? Can you borrow one?
 
Phoenix86, as I said in my first post, I have replaced the drive already but it still does the same thing. It could be that the computer is trying to read but the drive is actually writing if the r/w signal is faulty. I would try to replace the flat cable that goes from drive to mobo if I knew where I could get one. Where can I get parts for a Fujitsu C6140 lifebook?
