I'd purchased a laptop last month. It was working fine till I played a DVD couple of days back.
The problem is with the laptop fan.
I really didn't noticed it running but after the moment I inserted the DVD, the fan continuously get ON after every 2 minutes..runs for 15 seconds and the process continues.

I really don't know what exactly the problem is.
The sound of fan irritates me and disturbs my concentration.

1) Why the fan was not running before that?
2) Why it keep turning ON after every 2 minutes?
3) Is there any way by which I could control its functioning in WINDOWS XP?
4) Does DVD initiated this process?

Please suggest.

First of all what laptop do you have?

Second of all are you sure it isn't actually the DVD drive spinning that you are hearing?

Third what else have you done with your laptop so far? It could be that the movie playback is the first thing to really stress your laptop.
1)Playing movie = CPU works harder
2) CPU works harder = more heat
3) more heat = fan needs to spin faster to keep it cool
4) fan spins faster = CPU cools down
5) CPU cools down = fan slows down
6) fan slows down = CPU gets hotter
7) CPU gets hotter = fan spins faster ... now fo back to #4, rinse and repeat

That would be why you only hear the fan for a lil while, and then it stops and comes back again a while later.

Now everytime I turn ON my laptop, the fan turns ON too. It remain ON for about 15 seconds and the process continues every 2-3 minutes despite the fact that I am not playing any CD/DVD and neither I have installed any heavy software
The moment I inserted that DVD (that comes free with Computer Magazines), the fan waked up from its hibernation.

I really didn't notice it running before that, but now it repeats turning on and off.

I purchased a Compaq laptop with Celeron-M 1.4Ghz.

Now
* Does that DVD (that I played just once), changed some settings in my computer?
* Should reinstalling Windows will help?

Please suggest.
