Hey All,

Any help with the following problem would be greatly appreciated.

When I start up the lappy, the fan turns on for about 15 seconds, then shuts off until Windows XP starts...it turns on for another 15 seconds or so, turns off, and does not start back up no matter what. Soon the laptop shuts off automatically so that the processor doesn't overheat. So the question is...what controls whether the fan and how can I get it to work either when necessary or constantly (either one is fine). FYI, I have the most up-to-date BIOS.

I've spent an immense amount of time trying to solve this issue...your help would be fantastic.

Thanks.

Try dissasembling it and blowing out the heatsink and fan with CO2 .

PS, It's in the wrong forum.

I think it has to be something with the fan controller on the motherboard itself. Since you had the original fan/heatsink and it didn't work... then you bought another one (presumably from fleaBay)... and if you're still having the same problem, I doubt that both fans would be DOA (or, at least, partially DOA).

The only thing I could find when I Googled it was to hard-wire the power connector for the fan to another supply. On a desktop, this is easy... on a lappy, it's a bit tougher. See if you can stripe another set of wires and just pull the current from there. But, be careful! It's very easy to fry the whole lappy...

Good luck!

P.S. You should really move this to the MOBILE COMPUTING forum.

P.P.S. It's an IBM X30, I believe... right?

It's a Thinkpad X30.

RavinDJ is right, it's def. something with the controller, but that doesn't get me anywhere. I need to know how to fix it.

PS - I reposted in the Mobile Computing section.

FYI... you shouldn't repost your threads... a mod would just move the post to the other forum. Hope this helps :p
