Laptop Display "washout"

When start my Dell Latitude 15" laptop and the desktop loads, I get a nice, crisp color, then then after about a second, the display will refresh and become really washed out.

Any idea how to keep the color the way it was before the display refreshes?

Take a look at your icc profile, may be the reason

Or Adobe gamma or another color config program

For color profiles:
in xp: Windows Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Color
in vista: In Control Panel > Color Managment
Load your monitor icc profile or select sRGB.

Adobe gamma in installed whenever you install Photoshop. To uninstall it:
Take it out of your startup folder. Startmenu/programs/startup
Quick way to get there is to right-click on the start button and open all users.

Try the following: in Devices tab, mark Use my settings for this device, click Add and Load sRGB profile, then select it and click set as default profile. But sRGB is already the default profile, as you can see in Advanced tab, so, mmm.. maybe this won't do anything.

Don't you have the monitor icc profile? Have you looked for it inside the monitor cd-rom ?

Also, don't you have any color management program like Powerstrip, etc ? This programs modify gfx LUT. This can be the main cause.

I have PS CS4...I haven't deleted Adobe gamma yet...if I do will it mess anything up?

No. Adobe gamma is a software calibrator that photoshop installs without asking. Maybe you (or someone else) have modified the parameters. Well, open the program and reset to default values (unmodified); it also a solution.

Sounds like your nVidia/ATi settings kicking in as Windows loads.

Yes, gfx card software also allows to modify the LUT.
