I was just curious what everyone thought about this. I recently just bought a Inspiron 9300 and love it. I've seriously been thinking about replacing my desktop with it, but before I did so I wanted to know what you would do. Would you sell the desktop and just use the laptop for everything, or keep the desktop and use the laptop whenever you needed?

The reason I ask is because I think it would be nice to have everything centralized. If you're anal about being organized then you understand what I mean. Whenever I needed to leave I could just pick up my laptop and all of my files / programs / emails / settings, etc would be on there, instead of having to copy everything before I leave. Plus if I have a laptop I can use my current monitor as a second monitor. Not to mention I would have some extra cash back in my pocket. Or do you think its best to stick with the desktop and jsut use the laptop whenever I needed?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I'd like to know what you thought about this before I sold my desktop computer.

Thanks for your help.

I guess what I should be asking. Is how can I centralized everything so that I can just pick up my laptop and have all of my files. Should I create a network and store all of my needed files on my laptop? What would be really nice is having the ability to mount your laptop HD. Anyone know how to do this?

Thanks for your help.

Open any folder -> "Tools" menu -> "Map Network Drive..."

Like that?

ha ha didnt know about that, thanks for the help.

Does anyone else have a solution of their own to this problem. Essentially I want to take a HD from my desktop computer and use it in my laptop. I know this isnt possible, but thats what I'd like to accomplish. That way I have everything on either computer.

I've got a similar problem, and i've got what i think is the best solution to my requirements. As the cost of 2.5" HD's (Laptops) is more $/GB than the 3.5" desktop drives, I wanted to spend as little money as possible as well for the most storage, but i've got an extra PC floating which i turned into a server a long time ago.

All my files are stored on this server the time, which my desktop access whenever i login to it (mapped network drive). Same applies with my laptop. Took me a bit of searching but i finally worked out how to get my laptop to take a copy of these files whenever i unplug it from the network - which it synchs back into when i get home. Can't remember the software at the moment.

It means that i would have had to pay for 2x windows etc if i wasn't linux on the laptop!

This means that i've always got 2 copys of the documents - one on the laptop, one on the server, so if i get my laptop nicked again my files are still at home!

Problem is that i've therefore got to have a machine that's always on at home - but it serves a number of machines so it's not a problem for me.

Might be an idea to get yourself a NAS device ( NSLU2 or similar) if you wanted to go down this route for 2 machines.
