Are Pentium 4 M chipse interchangeable with Pentium M chips?

I have a friend with a HP laptop that has a pentium 4 m in it 3ghz. Grr I can't find the link for it atm, but http://www.intel.com/products/processor/mobilepentium4/index.htm so pentium 4 mobile chips do exist...

I see P4m and Pentium M chips both have socket 478 processors, and I was just wondering if its possible to swap CPUs for better battery life and less heat.
 
no they are not interchangeable. Although they are both "socket 478" the actual pinouts are different. They do not work in each others sockets.
 
Ah okay thanks for the info. I thought it would be something like that but its a hopeful thought to have an upgrade option.
 
didn't some company make an adapter for P-M's so they'd fit in a P4 socket? Although if they did I'd doubt it'd be useful in a laptop.

That was Asus, and it only supports specific boards. I think all of their i865 and i875 boards supported the adaptor.

It would not work in a laptop. It would require extra clearance and BIOS support.
