Laptop Cooling

Hey people,

I just set up a laptop (a ThinkPad R60 my school gave me ) for F@H. Right now it's only using 100% of 1 core, which shows as 50% on task manager.

I have never left my laptop on through the night, so leaving it on pretty much 24/7 while crunching proteins makes me a bit nervous. Are there any precautions I can take to keep it as cool as possible? Right now it's on a wide open area (glass coffee table) with a/c on and off.

Thanks in advance.

With my folding lappy, I have found that raising it off the table surface a small amount allows for much better air circulation to the cooling fans.
What I hear (or don't hear) is the fan(s) going crazy when raised. I have used a couple of pencils, placed so as not to block fan openings.
I have not checked temps, but the lower fan action tells me it works.

Fold on!

I's set up a 2nd client, but set both to 80% of CPU. I best colling will be same/better but you will get more points and do more science

and getting it off the desk is a good idea ;)

This really is your best option to maximize your points per day. Placing another client in another folder will allow you to use both cores at 100% or, like Kendrak advised both cores at 80%. That 20% reduction will decrease your heat more than you realize. 2 clients will maximize folding.

I used to set a book under the back of my laptop. I liked the angle it put on everything too.

The air vents are on the back and side of my laptop.

Would raising it off the desk make any difference in cooling?

Yes those are exhaust vents! Intakes are normally on the bottom and maybe under the keybord. I generally use the 2 tops for the 16oz size soda bottles to raise up the back of my laptop. Helps a great deal and I fold 24/7 360 with my laptop.

To maximize your points, you might want to try running the SMP client. I'm not entirely sure if it will meet deadlines only Folding at ~80% per core, but if it does, you'll get a lot more points than with 2 of the standard client.
