I have an Acer laptop I tradded for on [H]. It has Win7 Home Premium 64bit on it. When I try to install SP1 after the reboot it BSOD on me to fast to see error. Then I have to go thru the "repair/restore" option. This restores it back to before SP1. Any ideas as to why I can not install SP1? The laptop is an Acer 5742-6248. Can I use my desktop Win7 Professional disc to reinstall Win7 Home Premium with the serial on the laptop? Will this help?

You need to try pressing 'pause' in order to see the error code and description. If that doesn't work check to see if there has been a memory dump that may point to the problem or perhaps an entry in the event viewer.

Without that info it seems nigh impossible to detect the issue.

I usually prefer to install Window 7 with SP1 integrated rather than update a current installation. I would recommend this if updating keeps crapping out.

There is a forum discussion here about a similar problem with an Acert. I also found the following about BSOD after installing SP1 at http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/bsod-after-installing-sp1/f410bae3-ae58-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?tab=AllReplies#tabs

Method 1:
If you have installed any security software on the computer, then I would suggest you to try disabling it temporary. Make sure you enable back the security software once the troubleshooting is done to prevent the computer from virus attack.

Method 2:
Try downloading servicepack from the below link and follow the steps mentioned in the link to install.

If nothing else works, re-download SP1 again as perhaps what you received was corrupted.. and/or perhaps just try having Windows update install everything for you.. I know.. time consuming and using bandwidth but if you get to this point, you are probably starting to run out of options

The BSOD only occurs when I install SP1. The error code is as follows:
0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A9928, 0XFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0X0000000000000000, 0X0000000000000000)

When I boot in safe mode BSOD occurs on the line that has CLASSPNP.SYS. I imagine this is a plug n play line but there is nothing plugged into the laptop besides power cord.

Plug-N-Play isn't limited to externally connected devices. It works for internal devices as well.
